98 GLT stalls then starts

Post by aahmes57 »

hello folks,
I have a 98 glt that stalls at random and will then start after about 20-30 seconds. The problem is I don't know when that
will happen. The following codes came up when scanned. P0171 system too lean bank 1
P0455, P0301, P0303, P0304 misfire cylinders 1,3,4., P0300 misfire.
Not sure what's causing the stalling.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
John

A couple ideas regarding the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay:

Is the fuel pump continuing to run normally when the car stalls?

I can't remember if the 98 has the same fuel pump relay as my 97, but that would be one thing to inspect for solder joint cracks or other damage (or bypass for testing purposes).

+1 on the wise jreed's suggestions! Try having someone turn the ignition on when the car has been sitting and before switching on, open the gas cap and listen when the ignition is switched on and see if you can hear the pump priming.

If you hear nothing, just in case you do have fuel pressure use a cloth under the shraeder valve on the fuel rail and press the valve and see if you get any fuel pressure there. You could use a small jar to collect the fuel and run the pressure down. Then try the ignition key again and listen for the pump priming.

You can try the paper clip jumper in place of the fuel pump relay for a short time as suggested and see if the car starts and runs better. If this makes no difference then it is likely a fuel pump failing issue. If the car runs fine then have the fuel pressure tested to be around 42psi when running. High 30's is still ok.

Now we are assuming that it is a fuel related issue. If none of these tests improve the issue then we need to look at different suggestions.

Good Luck!

Neil.

What is the status of the ignition parts…cap rotor plugs? These parts need to be nice and shiny to keep good spark. About $100 for plugs, cap rotor. Takeagoodlook at the wire plug connecting the coil ( right hand side of engine , near fender) to make sure no green corrosion monster has pooped their

It is hard to sort out an ignition from a fuel problem on a random stall, especially if there is an easy restart.

Thanks abscate. I have to apologize for not updating my post until now. Pick-up is my primary vehicle in the summer, unfortunately.
I can't hear the pump prime even after I release pressure at the value on the fuel rail.
I didn't jump the fuel pressure relay because it starts and runs.
I'm getting 34 psi at idle and 40 running.
I'll have to have someone listen and check for the pump priming again.
It stalled yesterday and refused to start. If I'm on the highway and I feel the car stalling I can give it gas to keep it going. Seems to be when it warms up it happens. My A/C went as well. I think it's the compressor after watching Roberts you tubes. The clutch just won't engage.
I'm going to look at the wires and stuff per abscate's suggestion
I appreciate all of your comments. Thanks again

Well it appears the pump is running my wife hears a faint sound and I have adequate pressure. The cap, rotor and wires appear to be in order. No cracks etc. while searching the site I did find an older post with a similar issue from ozark lee, stating to clean the ICV and the MAF. So that’s next/ today. Thanks for your input

I removed and cleaned the idle air valve under the throttle cable cover. I cleaned out the throttle body. So far so good I just took it for a 30 min ride and no stalling. I’m on to fixing the a/c now so I can run it to make sure it’s working.

I had a similar issue and traced it to the MAF by reading the output with a scan tool. 99% of the time the MAF output was fine, but once in a while it would spike and the engine would die. It started back up immediately, though. If you have to wait 30 seconds, it's probably a different problem.
