Our 2008 XC90/V8 hasn't really been driven all that much because of the AWD issue or lack of AWD. Last week I was finally able to verify a failing Angle Gear and we have been on the fence about our options. Swapping in a new Angle Gear doesn't look like a good time and is more involved than the 1998 V70XC Angle Gear removal. A new Angle Gear is about 2grand and even if I replace the Angle Gear with new...there are no guarantees that the rear end is okay. In my opinion I think swapping in a used Angle Gear isn't worth the effort due to the fact that they are a common failing point on the AWD system of these vehicles. I guess it's going to be a front wheel drive vehicle for now and until we decide to repair the AWD system.

https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/2008 ... ar.309585/, sorry I did not see this until now.

Not sure how much fun it'll be to drive a V8 as FWD, was not much for me (although it was spring in the PNW).

If input shaft is stripped, only option is getting a nearly new or OE exchange gear if you don't want to start with a bunch of spline wear. Poorly designed interface, closed but not closed so oxidation occurs over time and in my opinion exacerbates wear on the interface. My photos are pretty standard.

Did you ever replace your Angle gear and everything else when dropping sub frame?
I'm definitely interested to hear the story.

I live in New York on Long Island and I'm looking for a good Volvo Mechanic to replace the Angle Gear on our 2008 XC90 v8. I'm not able to do this in my driveway, I work 7 days a week and I'd never finish a job like this. If anyone an recommend a good Volvo Mechanic that would be great.

I replaced with OE exchange, see parts list used with representative pricing. You'll need the newer version angle gear with bracket, etc.

I also replaced most of the hardware, certainly overkill but what I decided to do at the time. Didn't use all of the exhaust hardware.

Labor Day weekend is coming so be on the lookout for dealer/internet reseller sales. You may find as much as a 20% discount with free or discounted shipping.

Adding a note- you asked if anything else got replaced when the subframe was down. Answer is no but were I to do this again, I would have had the alternator replaced as part of the job. Think the angle gear replacement was at around 100k miles and the alternator failed at 130k, same general range as with the Ocean Race. For sure it would have been easier to do the alternator replacement up on a lift with subframe dropped versus on the floor and pulling an axle. There's a new cooling duct for the alternator, you decide if it's worth purchasing or not. I have one and tried to install on the floor but could not (used original heat shield). Sure it'll fit fine with the subframe down.

All the best with your repair.
