Pull tranny and motor or just the motor?

Post by Clemens »

Wondering if it is easier to pull the 20V NA out of a 92 854 with the M56 attached or without the M56?

If the transmission is connected both should come out to the bottom once the 4 subframe bolts are removed.

Can the motor be pulled out to the top with the M56 remaining in the car?

I can't speak as to the M56, but I pulled Sveedy's engine out from the top while leaving the auto trans in place. Had no problems with it.
I know others pull both both out from the top while still connected, but I felt it would be easier to leave the trans / linkage etc alone.

The M56 has to be drawn back (to left side of car) several cm (15-20?) to disconnect flywheel from M56 input shaft so you cant pull the engine up leaving the M56 in.

I've always pulled the motor and gearbox together, taking them apart in the car looks like a pain (but I might be wrong).

Goes out from the top, just need to go slow and avoid damaging the ABS module (a load balancer on the engine hoist helps)

Thank you for the replies. Now, since we are parting out the car, could i just drop the subframe with the motor, m56, driveshafts, struts etc. out of the car by simply loosening the 4 subframe bolts and the 6 strut bolts on top? most wires, fuel line, shift linkage, fenders and bumper are already disconnected or removed from the donor?

On a lift this should not take more than 2 hours, I guess ...

Don't forget the steering shaft from the steering rack! Also the muffler will need to be disconnected somewhere as well. Then I would suggest removing the radiator/ AC cooler to give more wiggle room.

Then there is the A/C connection to the dryer. You have already covered wiring.

Good Luck! Definitely a lot easier if you have a hoist/lift!
