What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

Depending on the age of the vehicle, even though we don't do any inspections annually here we have some inspections required:

1) Out of Province - Mostly I believe to make sure vehicle is not stolen and it can be checked against the province it came from data base for liens, stolen etc.

2) Insurance inspection - Depending on the insurance company vehicle can be anywhere from 10-15 years old and you have to have this done to get the vehicle registered as the insurance company will not issue paperwork which allows you to register the car. It is a fairly rigorous inspection but nothing like a UK MOT or German TuV. No brake tester rollers, or emissions or headlight alignments.

3) Then you can have a choice of pre-purchase inspections which you pay for on the agreement of the seller to allow you to do so. I have done this on some Volvos through the dealer. Price now is way up in the $250+ CDN range. Still won't catch everything but at least should catch any major issues for safe driving.

Now at least that I have finally managed to get a 2-post hoist in our garage, I can do a lot of the checking out myself. I am working on making up a P80 inspection check-list and then a planned service check-list with a list of stuff that is the not urgent category.

If I ever get that completed I will share it here and if you want to use it you will be welcome and you can then modify to your own design if needed.

After my shift today, as I got into my car to leave for home I noticed a 10" crack in the windshield that wasn't there this morning, originating from the top edge of the windshield (can't see a puncture mark). The windshield is aftermarket and has leaked before in the past from multiple places, especially near the top. I'm wondering if maybe installation error on whoever replaced the windshield prior to my ownership caused premature failure, or perhaps rust. Hooray, I get to buy a windshield!

My electrician gave me a 3.5 gallon air compressor. Got a hose set and fill the two almost flat front tires on the S60 2.5T project and fill the rear to 44 PSI also. Though clean now it doesn't look like an abandoned vehicle in my folks driveway. HOA only allows one vehicle to park in the driveway. The 03 S80 T6 and 07 S60, white and black respectively just sits , for now.

Finally brought my car into the indy today to look at my vibration/noise. Need a passenger side axle, and wheel bearing. Also need both balljoints done. Balljoints were moog and failed within 18 months… doesn’t seem right. This is shaping up to be an expensive week. The axle and wheel bearing I can handle and have done before. I have to find some good DIY threads for the balljoints, that dont require the 200$ tool hopefully.

18 months, wow. That’s frustrating.

I did mine on the floor, but I think you could also do them on the car using the simple pipe method with a dead blow hammer. Diameter just wide enough to not pinch the ball joint boot. Ace Hardware.

Don’t pull the ball joint up tight with the bolts - it’s aluminum.

That's exactly what I was planning on using. 2" (I think?) threaded iron pipe with a cap. Thanks for the pic. Air hammer is on sale here at Princess auto (Canadian Harbor Freight) for $18 this week, that should help with removal. Key for this job is to have the right tools available in your arsenal, and patience. I don't want to go to the machine shop to do thread repair on the knuckle. I've only been working on cars for about 5 years now, so I'm still building my tool and skill repertoire.

Here's a link to a thread I did doing ball joints a couple years ago. You don't need any special tools for removal or install as you'll see. I believe I also did one for the CV shafts if you do a search. They are both very easy jobs that shouldn't take more than a couple hours including the wheel bearing. I cannot stress enough the necessity of using good parts on these cars (Volvo brand) and not aftermarket. Spend the money and you'll only have to do it once!

take the money the mechanic wants and buy more tools, air hammer would work easy peasy,
I used a hammer and small tipped chisel to remove and install ball joint last week, it woulda been a quick job but for the broken bolt.
remove the knuckle for the bearing....so much easier.

I loosen the control arm bolts to allow extra downward deflection,
a 17mm offset box wrench for the 2 horizontal control arm bolts.
