A Mazda RX-5. Nice! If I remember right that's the first car the rotary engine was used in.

Great eye, June, I would have said the same thing if had drank enough coffee and stopped for a moment to think about it. I usually do one of those two things regularly. The cup is half full.

Yep aka CD Cosmo, yes on both counts if you include its father https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Cosmo in the rotary powerplant arena.

The official name of this sample is 1980 - CD23C Mazda Cosmo Limited.

Off topic: my dad's career was at John Deere, and sometime in the early 1980s Deere had a contract (?) with the Dept. of Defense to develop a rotary for Army vehicles, but it never went anywhere. This is from memory... from 40 years ago, so take with a grain of salt.

What do you guys see in this car? I see lots of Italian, with a dash of early Thunderbird (roof, B-pillars). I love the over/under tail lamps... which hint at American 50s designs to me but I don't know where that comes from exactly. It just looks like a 50s Jet Age American design item. Love it. And those tall steelies, my goodness. So pretty... and BIG for the size of the car.
