I'm gonna try the ignition check later today-
I didn't know that the ECU would have any affect on the starter.
yeah it's perplexing as it was a very sudden occurrence.
i'll post my findings as they occur!

I may be a little late to the party but did you try jumping the starter solenoid or small wire with power to the starter momentarily. I had a dead battery once that resulted in a no click as it lost the cca to crank the motor but lights and others stayed on. Fixed it by changing the battery. Diagnosed by jumping the starter directly to verify it functioned. Had another car starter go out and it was diagnosed by checking lights and radio on crank. No change in these accessories was consistent with no draw from the starter. Check fuses as well and hope it’s something simple. Cleane and grease your starter connections and terminals.

I'm trying to get the cover off the back of the ignition- to see if voltage is present in the start position but logic tells me that the issue can't be in the ignition- otherwise the electrical accessories would not be working?
The ignition switch has mulitple poles, that is, it connects many things independently of each other.

A failure in the starter circuit with operational low draw electronics is not only possible, its one of the common failure modes

Diagnose by using the 'starter bypass connection' underhood,if the 1992 940 is so equipped, or removing the small wire to the starter and attaching a lead to it, then touching the other end to the postiive battery terminal briefly.

Key out, transmission in P

thanks guys- did just that, and the engine kicked & started!
did more investigating with my multimeter looking for voltage continuity - voltage drops and stull-
discovered that the alternator wasn't charging. I checked the diodes which are good but the regulator has stopped "regulating", LOL.
Waiting on a regulator to come through & hopefully that should solve the issue.

Glad to hear, it reminded me that i need to finish my alternator rebuild thread from months back.

Checked the air in my tires. I put about 3psi in each to bring them back up to 36psi. Must be the roughly 20 degree temp change. as it's suddenly feeling more like fall.

I need to check the spare, though...forgot that one.

What was your battery voltage? May not have been enough to engage the starter?

Got my cam cover tool yesterday, swapped another set of cams in it and it finally spins freely.

Moved to the oil pan, as I'm tightening the second to last bolt I head the worst sound I've ever heard working on a car  Sounded like the pan cracking. I cant find any crack so I tighten the last bolt and go to bed.

As I was putting the oil thermostat this morning I saw what I thought was a crack. Took the oil pan back out, to find absolutely no cracks

Slightly starting to hate working on this car  I'm getting used to the 940 with everything being easy to reach

Disassembled the alternator as it was out of the car. Checking diodes and the stator bearings, the bearings are good but since this alternator probably is the original, I might just replace them. The diodes check out as being good. They show .237v one way.
I rebuilt an 80 amp alternator off of my '98 V90, (that is the original), but I found a used none at PnP that has done well for the last six years.
I drew off of that experience to have the confidence in rebuilding the alternator on the 940.
