Next level ABS issues, 1996 Volvo 850

Post by rspi »

I need a little bit of help or guidance here with this 1996 turbo Volvo 850. I've replaced the ABS module, I'm on the third module. The first module I didn't even have speedometer or odometer, the second and third module I do have the speedometer but not an odometer. All three modules I have the tracks light lit, the ABS light bulb is burned out so I'm not sure if that's on or not. I've scanned it with my VST and I have the following error messages (see pictures below) and I was wondering if these rear sensors could cause the odometer not to count because it's not counting internally, even though the gear is likely broken it should still count internally. Do you guys think this pump error code could be keeping my tracks light on or these rear ABS sensors maybe being damaged would cause this vehicle to lose tracks and not count mileage?

I do have a spare pump and 2 more modules with me.

I never trust the text code descriptions on scanners if it isn’t Volvo software. I don’t think rear wheel sensor play into VSS.

Hi Robert, is it a manual or auto? Different beast but I had a lot of ABS issues with a 2000 V70 base auto and it was corroded connections on the TCU. The dealer figured it out, cleaned the contacts and reseated the TCU several times to make sure of good contact and then the issues disappeared after resetting the codes. My issue was complicated by the ABS module being bad as well.

I lost speedometer signal.

Otherwise it is down to the usual checking the reluctor rinds for damage, I seem to recall on 850's it is hard to check the ABS sensor wires for continuity but that is the last area I would check as well.

Good Luck,

Neil.

You can measure the ohm ratings for the sensors. Midwest ABS has the ohm ratings listed on his website, I think.
The reluctor rings can do weird things if dirty or broken.
I think that that the pump can cause a Tracs light. At least on the earlier years. My 95 had the light on occasionally and sometimes the pump would do weird sounds then.
Has the ignition switch been replaced or cleaned? My guess is yes, but I had weird malfunctions when my switch went bad.
