Engine Mount question - how many

Post by MemphisTGR »

I'm not an expert at all when opening the hood of a car. You need international tax help? I'm your man.

Anyway, my mechanic wants to change my engine mounts (2000 S40), which I agree. He told me to find them and bring them to him and he would change them out. We do this as I always find way better deals online than him.

Problem is. What the hell am I looking at? How many mounts are there and what are they each specifically called.

Thanks for the help.

MemphisTGR, welcome to MVS.
Why is he wanting to change them all? Excessive vibrations? Visually, they look bad? I'm not really familiar with your car but as far as I can tell there are 4 main ones (there are also some subframe mounts but these don't tend to go bad as quickly so they're probably fine for the age of your car). Here's a vendor that's pretty good price wise and 3 of the mounts in question: Here

Another vendor who offers free shipping on orders of $39 or more has them here (includes the rear mount that FCPGroton leaves out): And Here

For the prices, I would ask your mechanic if the rear engine mount is really needed and order everything from fcpgroton. If you have to buy the rear mount I would split the order between fcpgroton and eeuroparts. The diagram below shows the mounts for your car with that rear mount (true rear, as opposed to LH rear and RH rear which are the other ones) in question highlighted...a bit hard to tell, but VADIS refers to the mounts as "engine anchorage."

Yes there is excessive vibrations. It has 170,000 miles on it, so probably warranted.

There are four mounts. I bought a 2002 S40 with a vibration. I bought 3 of 4 mounts but ended up replacing only the one on the driver's side under the airbox. Beware that several companies sell these mounts but the passenger side one on the 2002 is different from the 2000. The one under the airbox solved my problem and was very easy to replace.
