On a lighter note, Net Metering is an idea that some utilities are fighting, rather than seeing it as a cheap additional energy source, saving them from financing and building more plant capacity. Northwestern Energy, which supplies Montana, has been fighting it from the beginning, in cahoots with the Public Service Commission. They don't want any competition, they don't want to give away credits, and they want ratepayers to pay for their bizarre decision to purchase and rehab a shut-down, obsolete coal plant.

On the original topic, here's an idea for an in-town car -

Buy a barely used Fiat 500e, which I like because they look like the old 50's Fiat 500, swap out the springs and the dinky car wheels, and you've got an easily park-able, quick, good-handling, 100 mile range commuter and grocery getter. They were only sold in CA and OR for emission quotas, and they used to be dirt cheap - I see they've bumped up into the high teens for nice ones.

This is at an EV specialty dealer in Portland. It has 38,000 miles.
Should be more reliable than a little Fiat, it's an electric drill!

I wonder when they will figure out that if you go international on this, that someone is always light and you could move power around the grid and keep up the sun? Need to solve step up problem to mitigate transmission loss…

This is a bit mean, but also a bit true, and like 80% of things like that, was found on Facebook.

Whatever the case, this "stand" is also entirely academic*, like if someone said they're "done" with breathing in nitrogen, and they weren't going to do it any longer.

* or it will be in 20 years, when no ICE car can be a reliable DD unless you are very invested in knowing how it works and doing that work, like we do here at MVS... a lifestyle 90% (98%?) of the driving world isn't part of by choice

Car and Driver magazine arrived yesterday. The regular article 'What to Buy' featured the first generation Honda Insight Hybrid. It was produced from 2000 to 2006. They report you can expect to pay $10,000 for a good one. Expected MPG is about 50. Battery packs last about a decade and can cost $2000, but DIY replacement is possible.

Swagging….10myears, 120,000 miles, so a $2000 battery pack adds 2 cents per mile running cost for the next 100k miles

many upsides

You can armor plate them at traffic lights and seize ROW

At a light, four people can hop out, quickly flip them over then youtube them on their roofs, wiggling their wheels, trying to figure out what to do next, like a bug
