Tire wear- 2006 XC70

Post by AlanS »

I had my car aligned early in the summer. New tires all around. Front left tire is BALD on the inside treads...maybe the first row of treads. I'll have to replace it. Went to my local alignment joint...they said that the car is still in alignment. As I recall, I may have had this issue in the past. What comes to mind when you think about the inside edge of one front tire being bald? If I have to replace something(s), what would it be? I don't really have an independent that I trust, in that he always wants to do much more than is necessary. If I go in with a plan, he will follow it. A.

Check the ball joints for play. Might need new new ones at 100k

Inside tire wear like that is either caused by excessive negative camber or toe out. Negative camber is where the top of the tire leans in, like a race car - this seems unlikely if it was just aligned, unless they left a bolt loose, or a worn ball joint. Toe out is when the tires point outward in two different directions, like walking duck footed.

As abscate says, the forces involved could push on a worn out ball joint and turn the wheel outwards.

Today's alignment machines are easy to use. You no longer have to be a suspension specialist or a good mechanic to do alignments. Could be in spec but the worn part creates enough flex / bind in the chassis that it deviates to the tire wear angle. Upload the Alignment Print Out and photos of both front tires.

Perished lower control arm bushings are a common cause of this problem. In a static setting the alignment may be fine, but when driving the worn bushings allow a lot of deflection and can cause cupping or edge wear.
