Paul and ChitownV ,
I am not dissing anybody’s info. All is very much appreciated and I do my best to learn as much as I can. I am not a young person and sometimes it takes a little time for me to wrap my brain around a new concept which this vvt vs vvl is.
Thanks, Ruth

I’m glad you were able to diagnose and fix the problem with the REM. The cam profile switching, I’ve never had to change that on my 3.2. I’ve changed solenoids, cleaned solenoids, and replaced seals on other Volvo engines and non-Volvo engines, but with proper oil maintenance, mine has never needed it.
Good luck with the rest of your repairs and happy motoring

I took it to a guy who knows imports pretty well and all he said was it has variable valve timing and that an oil change might help.
I got this car a year ago for 500.00.130,000 miles .Put new tires on it and went from Virginia to Illinois and back without a minutes trouble. Only codes have to do with the steering angle sensor which I plan to take care of as soon as I get this other issue figured out.
I bought a Volvo dedicated scanner from icarsoft and it gives a lot of information (more than I understand at the moment)…still learning.
I went to town earlier which is about 14 miles. I cleared all codes before I left and checked when I got there. I had some misfires on #4. The car ran great at speeds 55+ but had trouble with lower speeds.
Coming home I put the cruise on. It did ok until it needed extra power like up a hill. (I live in western Virginia so lots of those)
Then it bogged down, but ran great over 55…it also threw a bunch of codes when it bogged down…. Misfire on 1,2,4 and random misfire code. Same cam profile solenoid code as before and catalyst below threshold bank 1 and 2. Thing is I can clear those codes and the only one that comes back is the camshaft solenoid and or maybe misfire on cylinder 4 unless I really stress it.
Any input welcome .
Thanks,Ruth

Well, as mentioned already, try replacing the solenoids and see what codes pop up after. They can be tested with a 12V source like if you ran wires from a Milwaukee M12 battery. Sometimes a 9V battery is enough to trigger the solenoids. They can can get clogged with carbon and junk from the oil over time too, which may the reason you need to change them since you may not be entirely sure of the oil change history the first 130k miles.
Btw, I’m in the DMV area so not too far from you. The cam profile switching would definitely occur for uphill driving, especially after a transmission kick down and the engine pushes to higher rpms.

That's the variable valve lift solenoid (round top) The rectangle top next to it is #1 ignition coil.
On my P3 the motor mount bracket gets in the way of removal but on your P2 it look like you can just remove it.
The motor mounts are different for P2 and P3.
That makes it easier to fix just the one Torx Bolt and the electrical connector to disconnect.
Warning!!! Warning!!! Warning!!!

Ruth, have you put a fresh set of spark plugs in this thing yet? The coils also do give up the ghosts at 100-150k miles

Abscate, the shop said that they had pulled and checked the plugs. I had ordered a new coil for the #5 that was missing at the time I took it in but they claimed they checked those also. However I don’t know what they did with the new coil. I have ordered new cam solenoids but I don’t know if that will fix the problem. There seems to be some back pressure as the plug off of the bank one solenoid is full of oil. The solenoid does seem to be bad.
Solenoids should be here the end of the week. I will report after installing those , doing a PCV check . I hope it doesn’t turn out to be the catalytic converter!
Thanks, Ruth

Update: replaced the vvt solenoid on bank 1. No more bogging out under load .Replaced the coil on #4 which was missing. Car runs like a dream now. Next project is the “anti skid service required “ Thanks for all the input/help! MVS is the best!
