Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?
Recommended replacement of a power steering rack because 3/5 bolts is generally regarded as sub-optimal….

That ani sway-bar bush also looks sub-optimal! Ouch.

I’ve always wondered how they make up those “ impact torque ratings”. Is there any physics behind those?
On the Kat, the Matco green monster did my rear axle bolts, and it was impressive.
That’s a $1000 tool…..
Say hello to my little friends, torque and fire….

I highly recommend checking out the Torque Test Channel on Youtube. Those guys test out just about every impact in existence, and show how accurate those torque ratings actually are.

About 10 years ago I bought a corded impact driver from Canadian Tire. It has a digital read out on the top where you can pre-set a torque value from 80 ft/lb and up in 5 ft/lb increments. I never expected it to be accurate, but it does at least get it to within 1-2 lb/ft of my hand torque wrench. I like it as it allows me to have the wheels seated and near the actual value before putting weight on the wheel.
As I probably paid something like $100 CDN for it I feel I have had good value out of it. It was great for the rusty pre-98 Volvo hub nuts which I had broken several 1/2" breaker bars over the years trying to undo them. It only goes to about 350 ft/lb but has been good value. I have never seen them since so maybe they were not great, or people put too much faith in the pre-set value being 100% accurate.

Earlier talk you commented with 1999 "CEM".. i just when checking noticed yes 2000 models with facelift seems have individual CEM already (i drew earlier line on 2001 due all mix in these two years on Volvo).. its slightly confusing on 99 models as Volvo using one place just CDM and other place CDM/CEM and sometime even as just CEM (even though not having.. individual CEM on whole system on that specific model like in wiring).. with before facelift model.
This what i refef i understand now better what bmdubya1198 did refer as P80. Makes sense.

I understand. I had a lot of 'fun' with Rica Tuning when I told them I had a 2000 specification V70R. They could not get the program to work on my car until I thought to ask them to check the chassis type they thought I had. They thought I had a P2 as in Holland they called the 2000 year the first year of the P2. So really confusing! Our last year in North America for P80 chassis was the year 2000 (August 1st 2000 to July 31st 2001). So for us the 99-00 is the years that had the CDM/CEM or whatever you want to call them!!

Recovered an NLA steering u-joint off an old rusty rack.
The through bolt snapped right off, so I drilled it out in six stages, nice and light pressure, sharp drills
Then I had to knock it off the shaft as it wasrusted on.

Went to replace my exhaust manifold gaskets on the V70R yesterday, just to find that two nuts/studs were pretty loose. Yeah, that'll cause an exhaust leak!
Pulled them out, and it's due to the threads being stripped out. Drilled out and installed a helicoil in the one position, holding nice and tight now. However the other stripped hole is the first one from the passenger side, right against the coolant pipe. Impossible to get a straight shot to drill it with my right angle drill (which worked perfectly for the other one) using a standard length bit. I just ordered a 6" long drill bit, that should position it closer to the firewall so that the chuck doesn't hit the water pipe and cause it to drill sideways.
Always something fun!

Rolled Kat another 500 miles yesterday. 28 mpg at 70 mph. I confess I love the LPT torque curve. Cruising between 2000-2500 rpm the engine gets all the torque it can possibly want with mild boost.
Qualified my fuel gauge. It doesn’t quite reach 18gallons indicated. Either alignment or slight extra resistance in wipers. It does indicate reliably down to 4 gallons, and eventually I will take it to the idiot man light and see what the refill is. I’ll carry a couple of gallons for that day
