Geartronic/shifter sensorlocation?

Post by Jonesroad »

Hi-

So I've been looking over the forum for this- maybe it is here, maybe it isn't.

I have a 07 s40 2.4i automatic transmission.
The manual mode shifting didn't work- so I looked on here, youtube, everyone says 'buy the shift shutter black plastic thing that fixes it.

So I bought the part, installed it- nothing.

The instrument cluster shows the gears - P,R,N,D . But when you go to shift it over, nothing happens.
Yes I'm sure I have it installed correctly- the rippled side facing downward.

I have unplugged the green silicon chipboard several times, cleaned both male/female ends with contact cleaner, counted outloud 100 inserts, pull-outs.. I have gently twisted the pins so make sure they are making contact.

I have another s40- It is a t5, but i took the green chipboard out of it; plugged it in my car- nothing.

I went to a pull apart junkyard today, pulled one of these green chipboard, or as I presume it is called the Gear shift module GSM... put it on the car- nothing.

I read on the scantool that this ...configuration uses a a hall effect sensor- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_effect_sensor -- to know when to shift into geartronic manual shift mode.

Does anyone know if the hall sensor is actually located in the green chipboard? or is it somehow located under the shift assembly?

Does the car need the manual shift option? No. It probably has been used 10 times in the entire life of the car. But I would really like to figure this out.
Have error code tcm-0192.

well- in case anyone was curious a quick update-

One of the first things I did on this job in trying to figure out why the geartronic wasn't working was replace the shifter blind/shutter plastic piece of shichit- ordered one off of amazon, made by uroparts.

That didn't solve the problem= started fooling with wiring..staring at the blackhole that is wiring diagrams.

I ended up going to the pull apart junkyard- pulled three center consoles, as well as 3 gear shifter module/ bezel whatever you call it. Tried every single possible combination- the lights worked on all, the winter mode worked.

I traced the wires from the gear shifter module, to the wiring harness connector in the engine bay fuse box, to the TCM. continuity, so I started thinking it was the TCM.
Working today... I dropped a screw down inside the bowels of hell...took an extendable magnet to get it. I grazed it across the top of the gear shifter module- and I noticed just for a brief second the gear indicator said "1"...and I thought..hmm. Maybe it isn't the tcm.

Played with magnets for about an hour, trying to figure out what's going on...

I remembered that I had picked up another shift blind from an s40 i was robbing few days back- I had actually broken the magnet off it accidentally, but I figured I would just give it a try. Had so much rejection between the two s40's i've been working on i figured why now.

I switched the old busted magnet into the uroparts shift blind plastic pos I bought...put it in put everything on that needed to be there to test it..and it worked.
I couldn't believe it.

The whole time..all the work...I mean HOURS and hours of my soul being eaten alive...was because a part I bought was crap and wasn't functioning properly.

Guess it's a lesson to not assume things are always the way they are even if brand new.

Interesting post. Sorry to bring up the experience, but having the same issue.

Replaced the broken blind but with a genuine Volvo part. Packaged and all, alas M mode does not engage.

Aside from trying another unit, any other recommendations?
