850 back seat latches not working?

Post by 454cid »

I'm trying to fold down the rear seat in my car. There are levers next to the head rests, but pulling and pushing on them doesn't do much. I might have actually bent them now.... not sure. What little movement I get yields absolutely no movement in the seat backs. Is there a lock or something that I'm not seeing? I can fold down the arm rest in the center that reveals a pass through to the trunk.

I was going to try to fit a TV in the trunk yesterday, but thankfully it was smaller than I thought, and I could get it into the backseat.

Edit: I did do a search here, and the threads I found didn't seem to be talking about the same thing.

I forgot if you have a wagon or sedan. Sounds like a sedan.

I am trying to recall if they had a lock in the trunk side to prevent access to the trunk if the car was broken in to. Do you have a handbook with the car?

If not, I am not sure if I have an 850 on (probably do) but it will be a Canadian market version. I will check if I have a 96 and if so you can have it for the price of shipping. I'll let you know. Only real differences are I think one dash warning light looks different and has the km only speedometer.

I seem to recall you can find the handbooks in soft copy on line.

There are locking latches in the trunk.

I actually do have a book, but assumed this might turn into a glovebox situation.... and it still may. I saw the red levers in the trunk and couldn't move them either. I think they're in the unlocked position, but I'll have to look again to be sure.

I can't recall if the sedan rear seats are like the wagon and have cables in them to operate the latches. I have seen the mechanisms seize in wagons, not sure on the sedans.

I had a quick look at a Volvo dealer website and it looks like a simple latch mechanism:

Dunno if it helps, but this is what mine looks like unlatched.

The lever seems to be directly connected to the mechanism; red lock thing up obviously.
