What Could Be Knocking?

Post by MoVolvos »

.

Thinking of purchasing a parts car. A 2006 S60 T5 that had the tic from the pan. The person kept driving it and now it has a knock.

What could be the noise?

Main bearing
Piston Slap
Rod Bearing

.

Irish betting says 90:10 rod bearing over main bearing

I think the rods lose oil first on these cars

rod knock can be detected easily.
remove plugs, rotate engine just past TDC, put a dowel on the top of the piston and push down.
wrist pin knock will produce a slight click when the piston is pushed down.

Thanks gentlemen. Your thoughts on this if that's the case and is the Volvo crank also accessible as this?

yes on FWD models you can pull off the oil pan pretty easily, its just alot of bolts. the side bolts you'll probably have to remove the engine mount and get some flex sockets.

Great thanks! You described it just like if not better than one of the videos I watched. That front engine mount probably could use a replacement so will remove it for ease of pan removal.

Have no experience with the anaerobic sealant. Sure to seal if applied evenly?

Clean both surfaces with brake cleaner

Don’t overdue it, a thin layer is all that’s needed. Roll on with afresh foam roller

It needs to be warm ish to set, like 50-60F, but you can tent it with cardboard and a space heater in cold climates

Permeatex 518 is fine, at about $10

The Volvo stuff is $60
