Weird brake issue
Hey everyone! We have three Volvo’s. 2008 XC70 and 2008/2012 XC90. Recently, my wife’s 90 (2012) has been having brake light issues. When the car is off, all three brake lights work. When you crank it, it’s working, then the moment it goes into reverse, only the 3rd (LED) light works and it says “Check Stop Lamp”. This seems really weird. This one has the REM in the rear, and everything I’ve read tells me it’s the REM, but the fact that they work when it’s off makes me wonder if it’s something else? I am considering maybe trying LED bulbs to see if that changes anything. i swapped the brake pedal switch with a known hood one and it’s still happening. If anyone can give me any suggestions on how to check the REM (I have a friend who has VIDA which I will try on Saturday), I would appreciate it.

Might find something in here (has a wiring diagram)- viewtopic.php?p=594654 although the scenario sure sounds like a misbehaving REM. I'll be eager to see what Volvo codes are being produced when the vehicle gets read.

If only 3rd lamp lighting it may be a relay, my 2002 S60 had a bad relay with that symptom.
