Where to hook up smoke machine?

Post by rick4484 »

I'm trying to track down the source of a P0455. I've changed the gas cap to a OEM brand, which I think was a mistake, so I'll be ordering a Volvo cap. Recently repaired a vacuum line that goes from the air cleaner housing just aft of the MAF sensor to the FPR, but the P0455 returned the next day after a few hours of driving. The charcoal canister is under the battery, already removed the wheel well liner and found no obvious signs of problems. The canister's hoses look pretty good, no splits or cracks. About 3 years ago I replaced the in-tank fuel pump no problems, no codes, afterward. But now have a P0455, so I'm looking at the vacuum hoses.

I have a smoke machine, ordered online, never used one before but have done a lot of research. I see some people used the air intake to introduce smoke, but I don't have the cone adapter so I may need to figure a way to seal it off. Are there any other suggestions as to where I can connect the smoke line on this particular car?

I have been chasing this on a 98 V70 NA for a friend ans so far had no luck either. I have replaced one of the valves and cleaned the one by the radiator out and swapped it for another, as well as cleaned the one that vents to air under the RH front fender liner near the hood hinge. Both seem to work fine when activated. I replaced all the hoses from the outlet of the intake manifold through to the carbon can and to both valves and no changes there either. The only place I can't get to is above the fuel tank and the roll over valve area. I plan to have the car smoked for the same reason. I have not done this either so will follow how this works out. I know guys have done this here before, so hopefully one of them will add value to your request.

I just removed the Evap Purge Valve (#9186818), original item, and in the process broke off one of the ports because the hose, also original, was not budging. So, I'll be adding that to the list of things to order. The other part of the port is stuck in the vacuum hose (#976735, now #9443862). I can't find the size on this hose anywhere online, by searching the part number, so that I can order an equivalent hose without paying a premium price. It looks like 4 or 5mm ID. So, I'll be ordering some lengths of both.

I bought a smoke machine online for $120.00. I didn't want to make my own or take the car to a shop. It seems easy enough to do, especially now that I have the EVAP Purge Valve out, I think I'll use one of those hoses to send in some smoke and cap off a few places.

When I did mine I disconnected the intake hose from the MAF, and used a latex glove to seal that.
Then plugged my smoke generator into some smaller ports (the one for the fuel pressure regulator midway the rigid intake hose, and the vacuum tree on the intake manifold)

Today, I hooked up my smoke machine to a hose that goes to the turbo from the EVAP Purge Vale on the air intake. I spotted smoke coming out of the following places:

1. A small hole at the bottom of the Turbo Intercooler where the radiator is located.
2. At the Turbo, close to the bottom. (probably the other end of the hose I was using to send in the smoke that connect to the turbo).
3. At the EVAP T near the fan shroud.

#2 and #3 are vacuum hoses, but I'm not sure why I'm getting smoke coming from #1, the bottom of the intercooler. The hole is tiny 2-3mm, looks like it belongs there, not made by damage.

Also, I didn't see any smoke coming out of the gas cap or the in-tank fuel pump, nothing at all under the car or at the canister, so I'm wondering if the hose I used would send smoke in those areas.

It is called a Weep Hole. It is specifically designed to address the condensate build-up inside the intercooler.

The weep hole showed up when Volvo had some throttle icing in cold climates when water from condensation would accumulate in bottom of intercooler and the water would be evaporated by hot air from turbo and then cool and freeze on throttle and could cause stuck throttle. There is no importance of letting oil out. The oil can pass and be burned in engine with no detrimental effects.
The throttle icing risk was not great and took certain humidity and temps for it to occur. Throttle sticking is not taken lightly, ask Audi, and more recently Toyota, how serious it can be to your bottom line.
I'm in Texas and my oil dripping, front valence staining weep hole is sealed. No problems, no worries.
By the way, the OTHER dripping place, the air inlet hose at turbo, is now fixed by a lightly smeared film of old fashion nasty sticky Permatex sealer. I had an OLD tube of that stuff from years back. I think you can still buy it. It is NOT the silicone stuff.

You shouldn’t have any smoke at the turbo or the evap T. Fix those leak, they will cause poor running,

The weep hole In the intercooler is normal and lets water escape from the intercooler

I just ordered a bunch of parts to fix the leaks I found, and replace the EVAP Purge Valve (#9186818). I decided to buy the EVAP Emission Hose (#1270480), it's pricey, but I don't have a lot of time to spend assembling parts. While waiting for the parts I'm wondering about the vacuum lines that go to the fuel tank, filler, and the canister. Do I need to send smoke through another place? Or, was my smoke test all encompassing for vacuum leaks?

I did another smoke test, but this time crawled under the vehicle to get a better look at the smoke coming from the turbo. I see a vacuum line at the bottom of the turbo, but I don't see smoke leaking from that. The smoke seems to be coming from a place above the spot where the vacuum line connects. I can't see that well above the vacuum line to tell if it's leaking from another vacuum line, that I can't see, or if it's a leak from the turbo housing itself.

Anyone have this problem before?

You have a vacuum line above the one on the bottom and towards the engine, the CBV, and another on top, the wastegate.
You should be able to see all three from up top.
