[SUCCESS] 1999 S70 GLT. Diagnosing electronic throttle system (or something else)

Post by z80 »

Hello!

The car is 1999 S70 GLT with ~177,000 miles on odometer.
The symptoms are:
1) Sometimes the car stops reacting on gas pedal and barely runs at ~600rpm. This condition lasts for ~20 sec to 1 min. After that it goes back to normal. No check engine light, no trouble codes.
2) Sometimes rpm starts changing on its own. It jumps roughly within 600 up to 2000 a couple of times. After that it goes back to normal.
3) Sometimes (more rarely) the car
  • a) first experiences either #1, #2 or both and
    b) after that it starts reacting on gas pedal again but performance is very poor. Idle is very low ~600rpm. It barely accelerates. 0 to 30mph takes ~1minute.
    c) When this happens, OBDLink (my blue tooth OBD2 adapter) stops registering any changes in throttle position. It stays perfectly constant even though the car can be revved up. Other live data signals seem to be as usual.
    d) ETS light comes on.
    e) If I shut the car down for a few minutes it goes back to normal. ETS light goes away after it runs for ~20 seconds after restart.
    f) No trouble codes and no freeze frame present. At least nothing readable by OBDLink.
4) The throttle is perfectly clean. It was a little bit oily. I cleaned it with acetone.
5) With the throttle out of the car if I move the plate by hand and observe throttle position live data, the position signal is perfectly monotonic with 0 fully closed, 100 fully open and default position being 20.
6) I'm not sure if it is related to the problem but my long term fuel trim now is at +11.
7) When either condition happens, I don't notice behaviour changes in short or long fuel trims.

Are these definitely the symptoms of throttle module failure, can it be something else, or something besides of the throttle module?

Even though I see no discontinuities in throttle sensor readings, can it still be just a worn potentiometer issue?

If the module fails internally, what might it be?

I'd appreciate any advice! Thank you!

That’s about as a good a diagnosis of a bad ETM you can get. VIDA would let you see the motor count on the two rotary encoders rather than the coarser “ throttle %” you get in Obd ( I’ve often wondered where that comes from)

I would recommend searching eBay for the late model, post 2013 contactless EAtM which sells used for about $150. Try to buy one from a turbo car , although I believe the software is compatible with all P80s cars. I have swapped NA to turbo successfully

See ETM forum below for part number you seek

Thank you so much for the reply!

May I confirm please? (I don't doubt your recommendation, I'm just trying to make sure about the fix before spending money.)

These symptoms cannot be
  • 1) just a worn potentiometer (plastic rectangular piece with 3 soldered terminals on driver's side). Re-soldering with a new non-contact one (with overriding the passenger-one's output) will not solve the problem.
    2) an intermittent power to the throttle module (an old relay?).
Thank you again!

I was only inside an ETM once so I cant comment on the root failure mechanism and fix. I note that home repair on the ETM is something like 50% successful based on reports here.

I'm posting just in case one finds this information useful. The sensor replacement has successfully solved the problem. However, there were a couple of unexpected issues on the way. The experience is described here: viewtopic.php?p=615255#p615255.

In short, recommended Permatex Ultra Blue sealant has been solidifying for ~3 weeks and I'm not certain of the 100% correct way to confirm a bad potentiometer on the side of the throttle body which has 5 terminals.
