97 850 GLT what's this noise

Post by jboncher01 »

It's been going on since I got it. From what I understand from forums it's something with aeration of the oil at lower rpm, just trying to verify. It's not to bad on cold start but it gets louder with a warm engine and when rpm comes up it almost goes away. Being a 97 GLT it has the LPT (low pressure turbo) engine. In turbo engines -98 Volvo uses the RHS of the radiator to cool the engine via a feed and return pipe. Where the pipes leave the engine by the crank pulley there is an oil temp thermostat. These can fail or get sticky with age and can cause a bit of a howl when warming up. I am guessing that is the issue as I cannot access the drive you show.

I can't figure out how to post the video file. Basically the noise I am hearing sounds like lifter noise.

The lifters on these cars can get noisy with age, especially as they are hydraulic I believe on your year. Also, if a filter is not used with a non-return valve (I only recommend Volvo OE can type, or MANN) they can allow oil to drain from the head making the lifters noisy at start up. You could use an oil flush, but I am always wary with those products on old engines.

The injectors can also be noisy, but they stay like that all the time.

Then there is the oil thermostat as I also suggested. For that, you can jack the car up when cold, and support the RHS front off the ground. BE VERY CAREFUL now. When the engine is started, see if you can isolate the noise to the thermostat. Be careful of the moving belts at the crankshaft!!

My '97 855 GLT makes the lifter noise, the injector noise and the oil thermostat noise. I know when I hear them I can take some comfort that things are "normal" -- at least the car has been making these noises and running well for about the past 10 or 15 years. Still pulling strong.
One way to upload video is to post it to youtube with a private link and then post the link here for MVS'ers to view and listen.

The worn dried oil seals could be it and it starts with that lifter ticking noise. Gets worst as the engine is warm as the oil flows faster. I'm experimenting with mine at this time as the oil pressure light was flickering and stayed on once or twice. Using a thicker oil and ATP AT-205 to see if the seals will swell enough so oil pressure returns to normal and ticking goes away. It had stopped a mystery transmission droplet on our 03 S80 T6.

Don't let it start knocking!
