2001 xc70 lost 1st and 2nd gear 3 ,4 ,5 works fine takes off in 3rd

Post by horizonmkt »

I have owned a 2001 XC70 for probably 12 years started with transmission issues. Changed the fluid right away to the recommended mobile 3309 fluid drained and filled numerous times and now I have around 170,000 miles on it in a running in the transmission issues again seems like the seafoam additive Has helped on occasion but recently I lost first and second gear but I found a new way to get it back
I tried forcing compressed air through the top hose going through the radiator and in addition I put a small amount of sea foam in my clear adapter tube and forced it back into the transmission wondering whether the properties in it would help clear the transmission filter Which I found on the forum that somebody else had done.
I'm wondering whether this is the right way to do it the proper hose to put pressure to get to the internal filter on and whether there's some other way or liquid to use to attempt to clean the internal filter which I believe is the problem. Any Ideas? Is this from a solenoid if so which one?
I love the car and everything else works great and would like to fix my self Throwing code P0762

I'd at least play around or disconnect the "W" switch. Maybe that has something with loosing 1st and 2nd.

Third page down of the Sonnax pdf linked below shows the solenoid off/on table and I think your problem is with solenoid 4. In gears 1 and 2 it's supposed to be OFF, which is not energized and since it's a NO(normally open) solenoid it is releasing fluid when not energized, the valve is open. When ON the solenoid is energized/valve CLOSED and it blocks fluid release and builds line pressure to act on the U2 and U1 shift valves. The fault code is stuck on, which means the solenoid valve is closed when it shouldn't be so it's probably blocked up. There are little filter screens for the shift solenoids in the valve body and I'll bet the S4 filter screen is clogged up. You could try a transmission flush additive but it may require the valve body to be removed and disassembled part way to clean or replace the little screen filters. You can see the 4 solenoid screen filters on page 7 of the Sonnax pdf. There could also be a problem with the solenoid itself where the valve is stuck closed when not energized or just clogged up. Less likely but possible is a problem with the transmission control module and it's always energizing this solenoid.

Somewhere on a forum found a post about putting air into one of the transmissions cooler line to "backwash" the filter Which one and do you think it would work on the internal filter if it's clogged??

If the filter is clogged 3,4 and 5 wouldn't be working fine so I don't think cleaning the filter will help you.

There is a thread here about drilling into the case and popping the filter to clear the blockage. Not for the faint of heart but success reported
