Replace the rear glass of a V 70 WAGON 1998

Post by manovlov »

Hello everyone *
I wonder if there is a tutorial to replace the left rear window of the trunk of my 1998 v 70 wagon. The existing window does not have the second wiring for radio antenna extra. I would like to do it myself replacement. This operation would alloaw me to install the second extra antena for the radio sc 901 unit. Is there a video that could explain the procedure?
Thank you in advance.

Can anyone describe a good method for removing the trunk side window in a V70 wagon? Also, what's a good way to remove the painted trim piece and reinstall it on new glass? I'd like to pull a used one from a junkyard so I'll only have basic hand tools, working outside.

My window was shattered when the two (beautiful) P80 front seats in my trunk rocked and smacked it when I took a highway on ramp too fast. Public service announcement: Secure your cargo. Or, have more space at home to store car parts instead of keeping them in your car.

I seem to recall it involves removing a piece of trim just behind the passenger rear door at window level. Ah, Robert has an overview of it:

I did once meet a guy at a junkyard who was removing the rear window for the very same reason, something in the trunk moved and cracked the side glass. I did not recall it being bonded in though.

I was able to remove a quarter panel window at a junkyard with spackle knife, duct tape, muscle, and determination. The job was strenuous and required extreme caution and patience. The job took me about 4 hours over two visits. I recommend finding and using a glass removal knife (thin blade with a 3" cutting edge and 9" overall length) instead of a spackle knife. I do not recommend using a wire since that will damage the visible exterior rubber seal, and my 30 lb galvanized braided picture wire snapped after 20 seconds of use. Here's the donor car which gave up its window.

Most of this information comes from Robert's quarter glass removal video with my own experience added in.

Trim removal:
The quarter glass trim is easy to remove. Undo two T15 screws in the door jamb and slide the trim forward. Clips on the top edge release, front first, rear last. Put wood or a screw driver against the rear vertical edge and tap it out with a hammer to start the removal.

Glass removal:
The quarter glass is difficult to remove, requiring extreme caution and patience.
Find a window with a soft outer seal. A hard seal might crack.
Remove all interior trim around the window for removal. A T25 screwdriver is required for a few screws. Remove the third row seat belt grill to reveal screws holding the lower trim to the front trim.
To avoid abrasive damage from work gloves, tape paper/plastic over the wire traces antenna (if present). Be careful not to rub too much against the black edging.

Begin cut the window sealant from inside the car for the top, bottom, and back since they're recessed in metal. Finish cutting outside on the front edge which is flush with the metal. Start each edge by pressing a razor blade in and making a 1" cut. Insert the glass removal knife or spackle knife into that cut and firmly press until it fully touches the body metal (top, back, bottom) or is visible through the glass (front).

The spackle knife method requires a chopping motion to slice about 1/16" of sealant at a time. With the knife pressed fully to the body metal, pull back so one edge is out in the air, rock the knife 1/16" toward the uncut sealant, then rock the knife down to cut until it touches metal. It's like Pac-Man eating pellets. If you move the knife more than 1/16", there will be too much sealant to cut through easily.

Once the top and bottom of the window are cut free, tape the window to the body with duct tape. You don't want the glass falling out. Be careful not to press on the glass from inside with this much sealant removed. Go inside to cut the corners and the rear edge.
Tape the window once the top and bottom are cut.

When cutting along the front edge of the glass, stop at the trim screws. At the screws, there are pegs molded into the rubber of the glass. They insert into the body sheet metal. Those are important guides for reinstalling the window. The 2000 I worked on only had the lower peg. See video 14:00. The hardest parts are cutting above the top peg (if it's there) and cutting behind both pegs.

Once you think you've cut all the glass, hold it with one hand, remove the tape (from the body only, leave it on the glass) with the other, and gently see if the window will come free. If not, identify where the adhesive is still stuck, replace the tape, and carefully cut those spots. Flexing the window even slightly could cause it to crack or shatter.

Looking closely at the cut sealant on the car, you'll see the many many slices I had to make to carefully free the window.

Take the window to a glass installer to have them properly install it. You could try removing the old window, its adhesive, and the adhesive from the new window. 3M Adhesive Remover or Acetone might work for the job. Let the professionals do the installation (and hope they don't scratch the paint or leave excess old adhesive). I was quoted a shocking $200 in labor, the same price as doing a windshield with glass I provide.

Replace the trim by engaging the vertical clips first, then the top front, top middle, and top rear clips in that order. Clip reinstall is at video 20:30.

It would be wrong if me to suggest to move to NY, throw a brick , and exercise your $0 deductible glass coverage option, so I wont do that
