Replacing "capacitor" inside speedo cluster?

Post by okeetee »

I've narrowed down the problem in my 940 Volvo to probably a shorted capacitor inside my speedometer cluster. My question is now this: once I take the cluster out....will it be apparent which capacitor is burned out, where do I get one that will replace it....and how difficult a job is it? Any help on this matter would be appreciated!!! Thanks!

I've never seen the inside of an instrument cluster for a 940 but as for identifying a bad capacitor, I would look to see if any are corroded or bulging. Not sure how much of a job it is to replace, hopefully just a desolder/solder job.

...thanks for your comment! Since you seem to know alittle bit about capacitors, if it is a bad one, where can I get a new one to replace it? Would it have to come from the Volvo dealer or are there other sources?

Just match up the bad one with one at the radio shack.

.....well, it just wasn't the capacitor....the whole thing was fried! So now what are my options? I think the easiest and cheapest would be to get a new/used speedometer head that could be inserted behind the cluster, right? I don't need the whole cluster, just the head. My question now is who sells them? Anybody got a link where they have had success getting a speedometer head? Is the 1995 model interchangeable with any of the other models or years?

try www.car-part.com go to the page with the asterisk for the lowest priced part. You can then sort by distance.
