Remote Engine Starter For 1998 v70

Hello there,

I was looking around the web for some strong twist ties (ha ha the ones that come with baggies these days are made with hair thin wire) and ran into a "remote starter" and immediately realized this could help me a lot with my car as it would allow me to start the car every day or so when i am not using it.

So the question is, is there one that would be good for this car and also would it be hard to install? I dont want to run into a nightmare of rewiring or anything like that of course, and that's probably the main thing.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Main advantage is your car is pre-security chip so much easier to install.

I have a 2 way fob (lets you know it has done what you asked by confirming car has responded). I had to get an extra fob made to make it work with my 2000 R. Fobs are also re-chargeable.

The system I have is from Viper, but I have a similar but cheaper system from icarstart (who make most brands) fitted to my 4Runner. Again both work great and have a great distance they operate over. I had to pay to have them installed and they are typically around $600 CDN (about $450 US) up here. You can buy and install your own system and with your electrical and electronic knowledge you can probably do it.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Neil and nice to hear you had a lot of experience with these.

Would you happen to know what is involved with installing one of these things, i mean it has to bypass the ignition key somehow that doesnt sound too easy.

I would like to say I do, but that is not the case unfortunately as I had the supplier install them. As most regulars here know electricery is not my thing. I can fault trace and simple stuff like that, but something like this I leave to the professionals. Especially on the 'R' as it is not just a starter but also an immobiliser as well.

I know there is some kind of unit needed to work around the automatic trans but other than that I don't know. I know places up here like Canadian Tire sell systems for self install so can't be too bad for someone with an electrical background.

Yes i read that the immobilizer types are more difficult to do lucky i dont have that on my car.

I am getting some idea how difficult they are to install and i can see they are not what i would call easy, but it does look doable so maybe worth a shot. Just have to be careful not to screw anything up.

Are you saying you do repairs on other folks cars too?
