I have an exhaust smell when i run the A/C and the blower. It is especially noticeable when the car is stopped. I have a newborn child and really am nervous about this....any ideas? The dealership says they do not smell it and our local repair man says he also does not. However, everyone who actually rides in the car does...

You can pick up a carbon monoxide detector fairly inexpensively at any home improvement warehouse. This would let you know if you do have a real problem or just a smelly interior.

Also, is the smell more prevalent in recirculate or fresh air?

I have not checked if the smell is more prevalent in recirculate or fresh air. I mentioned it to the gentleman who rebuilt my starter yesterday and he said it could be a muffler problem...another volvo owner said it sounded like a manifold problem...I am really confused. I will check to see if the smell is more so in one or the other modes and I will reply tomorrow morning. I definitely know it is not just a smelly interior. I just think nobody else that looks at it lets it idle with the air on and sits inside the car. Thank you.

I had the same problem after I had the main seal replaced on my 850. As it turned out it was a small rubber hose that had pulled off the metal nipple. It is located between the top right side of the engine and the grille, facing the car. I found it in the dark with a flashlight. I was able to see the exhaust puffs. I just pushed the rubber hose back on and that was it. Hope it helps.
