Over the week end, teh charge (red battery icon) light came on on when I first start the car. A couple of blips to the gas pedal would make it go out, and it would not come back on until the car was re- started. It eventually threw a check engine code - I am going t rest the codes, take the car for a drive and see if the check engine light comes back. If it does, then off to a code reader.
The drive belt looks good, but it seems to have a bit of slack - how much deflection is OK?
My car has a splash pan, and I took it off to have access, and I am going to put it back on, if that has anything to do with the problem.
failing alternator or belt?

Check the codes prior to resetting them.
A belt is much cheaper and easier to install than an alternator. If the belt or tensioner are in question at all, by all means replace them. Do you have any squealing pulleys ?

no squeals, and the pulley doesn't wobble when I tried to move around. Of course, when I started the car this morning, I got "Electrical system needs attention" prompt on the computer display, plus the "battery" light, but it went out with a couple of blips of the throttle, and stayed off.
I'm going to drive the car around this morning and see what happens. I have to take a 1 1/2 hour each way drive tomorrow, and I hope the issue won't cause a problem.

Only buy Bosch or a reman using Bosch components. Look at the Voltage regulator for bosch logo.
I bought reman they used aftermarket regulator, I had to do the job 3 times and fight for warranty. Not worth it.

Thanks - found a reman Bosch on ebay and Amazon - 120 Amps, I think.
Could it just be the regulator?

Could be. Is it worth the labour and cost to replace the regulator, only to have the pulley fail within a month? Thats the way I look at it. Up to you though.

No problem. Swore mine was a a t45 ….
Not a bad job once you do it. Drain coolant, remove upper rad hose. Remove rad fan and it gives you a lot of room. Swing PS pump out of the way with reservoir attached, loosen lower ac compressor bolts and it gives you enough room to fit it out.
