'94 850 57 code at auction 12/17 in Philly

Post by foggydogg »

There has been plenty of column-inches of debate about buying auction cars, several of us have experience with these folks.
Fee structure under $1k isn't too bad, although in Philly they tack on a goofy $95 'fuel' surcharge, on top of an internet fee.
As mentioned - and reminded many times - this may be of interest for people nearby THIS auction location. People 4000km away should not concern themselves.

BUT... early 850 turbos are getting scarcer by the minute, this one is showing 50k (trip ODO all aught warning), doesn't look hateful in the pics,

Look at that dash pad. I might actually believe the ODO is close.
Philly takes pics under the car - mostly to prove the CAT is still there.

Wow, they do really nice pictures! The undercarriage picture an interior 360 are really nice!

I see water in that interior..... sunroof drains, maybe? There is water in middle of the back seat, and in the Interior 360, I can see a falling headliner and water drips on the sunvisor.

Ok, I've run into this before...... how do you find out what an auction closed at? Completed auctions disappear for me. I refreshed the page, and boom, back to the front page. Clicking the link again, doesn't work either.

You can put in an early $100 shill bid , then you get a notification of closing. Or watch the live auction with popcorn!

So it sold for $1600 before fees? Interesting. I didn't get to look at the pictures but it sounded decent from your descriptions.

As the good Doctor mentioned, making a bookmark bid lets you see it on the "cars I'm bidding on" page - but you have to register as a bidder first.
My method is to use the "watch" feature, and I make it a point to check there to see if a car of interest is finally scheduled to go on the block. Some cars, though, show up in inventory and are listed for bids on the same day. There seems to be no pattern on when or why that happens; the Jensen up in NH is one example,
https://www.capitalautoauction.com/inve ... 6300ab2200
It was listed on inventory the day before the auction, I whacked it early just to see if I needed to call the bank and extend my credit line. It didn't make reserve - it only made $2,825 - I don't know why and I don't know anybody at that location to call.
The last one they had made over $13k plus fees.
At this point this is realistically just a spectator sport for me. If I see something I think our little tribe might be interested in I try to pass it along.

All aught trip ODO is a big warning sign on the 850's. The big clue on that car was the bright shiny dash pad, an extreme rarity these days, and a sign it may be either low miles or well-cared for, probably the combination.

Since I put these cars on the forum, I should follow up with the whole slice of the pie.
Hammer: $1600
Internet fee 69
Fuel (!?!) 8
Buyer fee 265
Total $1942
(Plus a credit card fee as I recall; I've avoided that by doing a cashier check direct deposit on my last two buys)
As long as this particular car doesn't have any major surprises, that is likely well under retail market.
Some cars have a mystery $95 "surcharge". Dunno what that means, or why it gets added to what looks like regular charity sales. Some fleet and government cars and trucks have other fees added to the tab.
