So im planning to rebuild the head with valve replacement and the works. My question is how do I set the timing on the vvt engine since the belt broke?

Have never given thought to this but on the sitting Project 07 S60 the rusting rotors look brand new so do the pads. Do you just drive the rust away and some into the pads or do you remove it with sand paper or some other?
.

Single VVT?
There are a couple videos around on how to set things up, but basically, you need to "zero" and lock the cams on the back side, and then deal with rotating the VVT sprockets CW and hold them there (if needed, depending on the hub type) while you install the belt.

Same goes for dual VVT, just more hub hassle to deal with,

Any cam timing changes (if those are happening) need to happen AFTER you get everything in place and the belt on.

30 degrees and falling here, and you're up there working in the snow... brave man! I'm afraid to go outside, but I don't have much of a choice!
ZionXIX wrote: 22 Dec 2022, 19:28 I changed out the fuel pump on the xc90. The 3d printer lock ring tool worked magnificently. It needs some minor adjustments but it worked. This did not fix the problem. A good used ebay pump control module did not fix the problem. On a whim a checked the timing belt. I wish I had did that first. I didn't want it to be true. So good news is I found the problem.......

Ooof... that's the last thing anybody wants to see. Well, at least you have a definite answer on the problem.

The VVT is easy to set up, there are some good videos and writeups on the proper way to do it. Being a 2.5T it has dual VVT, which does not have the spring loaded hubs like the single VVT engines. Makes it a little easier to set up.

It's still -5*F here at noon.
My heater in the garage can't keep up, so I'll have to wait until after the holiday to get back out and work on the T5. At least was able to put the cam cover through the ultrasonic cleaner last night to clean it up, before the bottom dropped out of the temps.

Drove to the next city over to pickup a few auction winnings. Got some "new" speakers for my desk, and some misc. automotive manuals. S70 did great. Roads were a bit slippery, but not a lot of snow, but a lot of wind. Not much traffic. Last night on the way home from work wasn't too bad either. I was a bit concerned about the Pirelli P4 tires not being suited well enough for the snow, but I think they're doing ok.

I bought Flex Hone for Rotors. Put the rotor on a metal lathe, spin it up slowly, then work the hone over the surface with gentle pressure. This removed pad deposits (from the car sitting too long) which caused vibrations when breaking. I will try this again to remove rusty rotors on the T5M which had been sitting for six years (though the calipers are removing the rust) and my rusty Benz which has been sitting for eight months.

Yup, my little 220v heater in my shop wasn't doing much for me. Kept it over 40 or so inside, so it could have been worse. Meanwhile it got down to about 25 and still very windy by the time I left around quarter to 6.

I feel for you guys in warm climates getting a blast of deep winter. You need 3-4 weeks to acclimatize to cold or you really suffer.

My Polar bear channeling let me knock off two axle installs and get Grunny back on her feet on Thursday!! I was flirting with 28-35F all day. Nitrile gloves under Craftsmsn work gloves for hands. Coveralls for warmth. Moving blankets on top of ice layer kept body warmth on ground
