Tire Sizing For 2 Cars

Post by MoVolvos »

.
Acquired a set of Camulus 18's from an XC90, 18x7 ET49. Going to use them on the Project 2007 S60 2.5T, will required hub rings.
The Orpheus 17's 17x7.5 ET49 will go to the Project 2000 S70 Base. Will remove the Plasti-Dip and paint from the Camulus as some removal revealed pretty clean and shiny original paint. Welcome all suggestion on tire sizing and or thoughts on their looks on the cars.

I've cut and paste, not to scale on how they may look.

3 Questions:

1) How to remove the Plasti-Dip without dulling or damaging the OE paint?
2) Tire Size for the S60?
3) Tire Size for the S70?

Thanks!

Plasti dip should be removed with heatgun...but carefully.
The heat is 300-600 C⁰.

I've looked at XC90 rims as a possible swap too. The same rims were listed twice at a semi-local auction, but I decided now was not the time. I'll be interested in how this works for you.

XC90 rims should fit for Gen 1 XC90's. The only issue is that the offset is 49mm. This can cause rubbing on the inner fenders, but maybe 5mm spacer rings would help. I run those on my V70R and occasionally get rubbing. I did not have an issue before Volvo replaced the front sub-frame bushes. It only rubs on one side.

I would keep the tires no wider than 225 but those may be a bit if a push. Check the rims at the rear don't rub on the parking brake cables.

Thanks for all the feedback thus far. Appreciate some of the things to look and be concerned about. My main concern is the ET49 offset of the Orpheus 17 rims going on the P80. The offset might cause the 215 to rub the strut body especially when the rim is also 7.5" wide. Also, look like a minimum of 225 should go with the 7.5" width?

P80 ideal offset is a factory one which is ET 43.

On 850 you can go with ET 49 and 7J as long as you don't go wider than 205(205/50 or 55 16).

I have factory alloy wheels from gen.I S80 as a winter set on my 850.
215 can't fit because of a strut clearance on front.

Not sure about s,v70.

However...6 or 7mm spacers will make them to fit perfectly.

+1 with Misha on this one. As he says factory wheels are 43mm offset, but I have seen options of 38-43mm on P80. The 3 issues you get are 2 at the front:

1) Wheel width causing rubbing on full lock - 205 is a standard width. Did not believe 850 suspension was any different to V/S/C 70 other than in AWD configuration. Even there the car runs on slightly higher side walls.

2) Rubbing on the strut, particularly where higher sidewalls are used hitting the bottom of the spring seat. I have not seen a tire rubbing on the inner sidewall on the strut but I guess it may be possible with wider tires and 49mm offset. I have not had this issue on my 00 'R'. I now get rubbing on the inner fender liners, but I did not get that before the sub-frame bushes were fitted by Volvo. I am going to guess as it is only on one side it is caused by changing in the position of the subframe. I am running 49mm offset with no spacers and 225/45/17 tires.

Rear:

On FWD cars the position of the parking brake cable can be an issue with wider tires and larger offsets. Make sure the rear of the tire is not catching. I have no experience of this as my P80's that have ahd 17" rims have been AWD only. There you have to watch for rims catching on the rear AWD sub-frame with wider offset on full suspension travel downwards like when jacking the car. Parking brake is not an issue as the cable comes out of the rear of the hub and not the side like FWD.

I'm currently running 205/55/16 from 07 S60 2.5T.

Was thinking of 215/45/17 instead of the 225/45/17 due to the 49mm offset.

Can't use the 205 as the rim is 17 x 7.5 ET49 which is the same as an 03 S80 T6. Spacers are a must in the front with 215's?

.
