I don't think I'd dismiss this too quickly.
Just a few weeks ago, I saw a report on the nightly news about the NTSB wanting all new cars to be equipped with speed governors. The car knows what the speed limit is on the street you're driving on through gps, and won't let you exceed it. There is a 10 second override of some sort that would allow you to pass, briefly. They showed the reporter happily demonstrating the system on a street in downtown NYC. Apparently none of these geniuses have ever driven across Texas.

Taking this " sci-fi " thread a little further -
We all end up in self-driving cars, that are all made by the same manufacture, that never go faster than what some bureaucratic entity decides is appropriate, and can be effectively seized by the " authorities " for violations.
But we still get to pick what color car we want. Within reason.
