2001 V70 XC

Post by Brassman »

I recently bought an 01 V70 XC with about 222k miles on it, and the last few days it has flashed the "no oil pressure, stop engine" message at me. It only appears when the car is at temp and idling for more than 10-15 minutes. Is there sludge in the oil pan, or is this a sensor issue?

Good one for a 1st post. You didn't mention if the oil was clean and to level. Any service records for this 21 YO?

Well Brass... MDK here. Without being there.. generally low oil pressure might mean the internals of the engine are probably plugged up.. pick up tube screen. If it was mine.. I'd change the oil with a cheap 5w30 +new filter..- minus 1 quart then add a quart of transmission fluid to the oil and drive it around for awhile. That will "wash" the internals. About 500 miles and dump the oil , put 5w30 full synthetic and new oil filter.. might help.. might be 2 late.. don't know.. I've seen other men do what they call a "diesel wash" drain the oil put 6 quarts of diesel in the engine and let it idle for about 20 minutes.. idle only!! Don't hit the accelerator pedal! Dump it 5w-30 oil filter.. etc etc etc.. though I've never done it myself...

Most likely your oil pan o-rings need to be replaced. They go bad with age and leak. Not a horrible job - drop the pan, clean things up and replace the o-rings. Plenty of write ups on the process.

This was my situation when I brought my 01 home. As SuperHerman said, you are looking at dropping oil pan and replacing those o-rings in there. On the bright side, this will let you get a good look at any sludge, etc. if any and can clean it up. Get the correct anaerobic sealant to put it back together and pay attention to the bolt replacement procedures there are a couple bolts you have to put in first to get everything to line up IIRC.
