'02 V70 (Engine No.) ?

Post by Mr. Detail »

Can anyone help me figure out what my "engine number" is? Is it buried within the VIN or is it somewhere else on the car?
Thanks and Happy 2023!

What? send a picture of it. There should be a sticker on the "B" pillar. Open the driver's side door and you should see it. The VIN contains all the pertinent info for that vehicle. MDK

It will be stamped on the engine block, on a smooth machined area. Search in this forum for "engine number" for more specifics than I know.

It's stamped on the block, on top of the water pump boss, where the coolant pipe enters the engine.

If you look over the left side of the timing cover and look down, you should be able to spy the flat spot with the #.

(That is, if the sticker is no longer on the timing cover)

The VIN only has the engine type identification. The sequential engine number is =/= to the VIN, or any part of it.

So, what useful difference is there between having the engine type (early -late) VIN... versus engine # . What can be gained by knowing that number?

MDK, no sticker on the "B" pillar at all. I will go out at lunch and check for that sticker on the timing belt cover.
What be gained as an example is the correct part number from a place named "Rock Auto", which I am sure you have heard of.
Certain parts are listed by "engine no.".

Knowledge, money and time saved. No Oxford comma.

Many engine part do not break changes on VIN or model year but on engine number.

Examples. Timing belt tensioner, engine mounts, valves (7mm to 6mm) , stem seals, purge valve/canister
