Okay, I plan to replace the water pump (Aisin) and the timing belt but wondered what your opinion is on the idler pulley and tensioner?
Should they both be replaced also at this time?
186k presently on the car and the timing belt was changed in 2013. Not sure though about the other parts.

Getting nervous now. Just got a return call from a Volvo specialist (Wolfe Automotive, Malvern, PA) and he said that he won't do a timing belt on any Volvo's pre-2005. What? and this is a Volvo specialist. What are they scared of?

I don't know what the problem would be for the tech. The only tricky parts is assuring the valve timing does not change. This is a moderate skill DIY job.

Just do it yourself, lots of info on this forum on how to. I think I posted a thread on the job from last year with pictures. It's a straightforward job without any pitfalls if you follow the instructions. Should take less than 4 hours if you're slow and methodical. Marking the old belt with a white marker once the timing marks are lined up before you take it off is the best way to make sure the new one goes on the same.

My local shop just did mine at just under 290k on my 2002 V70 2.4T. no issues so far. I would have done it myself, but time, space, and comfort were factors. I really couldn't afford to make a mistake, and Volvo is almost all my guys do, and I've trusted them for almost 15 years with that car for things that I haven't had time to deal with myself.
That being said, I blew a factory seal on mine a few years back, and had to do the timing belt earlier than the interval as a result (which is why my mileage may seem off from expectations). So....if you have never replaced the seals, consider yourself lucky, and I would seriously consider going ahead and doing them when you do the timing belt. Because my seals had been done 100K or so ago, the my guys said it probably wasn't necessary this go round. Also, if you do the seals, note that you'll need at least one special tool....that you likely will NEVER need again.
I bought all my parts from FCP Euro, and they approved of the parts I purchased.
(these are FCP Euro part #'s - wherever you get them from, make sure you get Continental Belts, INA Pulleys/tensioners, and Aisin water pump - and do not forget the bolts for the water pump!)

We just did this job last night on my son’s 2007 V70, and we’re sailing down I-84 now. +1 on Yes on the water pump, roller & tensioner with the timing belt. Don’t try to save money on any of these things, like the Continental or stock Volvo belt is best imo. The function and supporting gear for the timing belt is so important it’s not worth saving $10. That said the 2001 and later belt tensioner that I’ve seen on my old S80 and my son’s 2007 V70 is superior to older models. It varies tension based on temperature so the belt stays very close to ideal specs.
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.
