Re: DIY: 1998 V70 REAR Cam Seals using SKF 11809!

If you find a repair fitting the "core" class then ONLY use Volvo parts. Else, oem and aftermarket may just serve the immediate and short-term need.

CORTECO is recommended for CAM seals - superfluid application. Someone wrote, SKF are best in HIGH viscosity applications - example: bearing, axle, drive shaft, angle gear, FD etc.

I've 50,000 miles on CORTECO.

Good to know, I'll probably go with Corteco. eEuro carries them for under $6/piece.

There is also consensus among MVS that a Volvo with 100,000 miles is ready for PCV service, IF neglected, CAM seals too are at risk of failing.

Yup, I did the PCV service a while back... before I even had the car registered. About 20k miles ago.

- So my 2 cents: stay away from the Volvo OEM seals, stick to SKF or Corteco, but I may be wrong. Anyone with long-term experience (preferably > 80K miles) on whatever seal, please post.
Reading this thread once again in preparation for replacing rear exhaust seal in our 2001 V70XC as a part of PCV overhaul. I'd replaced one in our '97 850 with Volvo's, which now has 60k+ miles on it. For 2001 V70XC it is PN 9443310 with CVVT in front.

Observation: The rear sealing ring goes over the camshaft. My 28mm socket's relative ID matches the camshafts's OD - goes over nicely. For the initial press, I'll thread a longer M7 bolt to cam through the 28mm socket (the screw used for intake manifold is M7 x 30, it is a same thread pitch). FWIW, the 36mm socket slides over the 28mm socket perfectly to continue with the seating of sealing ring.

What is Camshaft OD?

Make match marks on the relict or plate and distributor rotor on the intake rear cam , for you -1998 guys.

I did a job a few years back and found these parts will go back together incorrectly indexed, which cost me three weeks of part time crank, no start troubleshooting

Yep, my cousin learned this when we did his timing belt a few months ago.
