I have just bought a 2001 S40 1.9 D (102bhp) with 138,000 miles.
It starts easily and runs well, but when sitting still in neutral, it will often cut out. Once it does, I can start it up again with no hesitation.
I've also noticed a couple of times that as I'm slowing down (for example at a roundabout), the revs will suddenly drop to idle (just over 500rpm), and sit there for a few seconds before stalling. When this happens and the revs are at idle, it completely ignores my use of the accelerator pedal even if I floor it.
Any ideas?

Welcome to MVS.
So you say you just got it? Was there any kind of warranty at all?
Do you know if some basic maintenance was done? What comes to mind is simple fuel cut-out. For this to be happening, it could be a that the fuel filter needs changing...if it's clogged or partially clogged your description could be the symptoms. Another possibility is that it needs new plugs and possibly wires. I'm thinking that on your model you don't have a rotor and cap but power packs right at the spark plugs. To get to the spark plugs to check you will need to take the spark plug cover off...easily done but the screws holding it on are torx screws.

Thanks for that
.
I knew of the problem when I got it - was very cheap. Maintained with Volvo until 2004 is all I know. All the fluids look OK so it has continued to be serviced, but no idea how well or how often.
There are no spark plugs/wires/etc. as it's a diesel. Fuel filter is a nice cheap thing to try though.
Could it be the Electronic Throttle Module problem that has affected some Volvos?

If I recall correctly, if it's a diesel, there is some type of a large filter that needs either cleaning or replacing periodically. Does anyone know?

There is a fairly large fuel filter in the engine compartment the main purpose of which is to remove water from the diesel fuel. It should be drained every 10,000 miles and replaced every 20,000 miles.
If this has a lot of water in it you will experience the symptoms you have.
To drain the filter put a container under the engine just beneath the filter. Attach a long tube to the bleed screw under the filter housing and put the other end in the container. Remove the engine cover and open the fuel pump bleed screw. Now open the bleed screw on the filter a few turns until pure fuel is coming out. Then close both bleed screws and remove the tube.
To renew the filter do the above first. Remove the shield plate around the filter. Remove the filter. Clean the mating surface of the filter casing. Grease the O-ring. Turn the filter by hand until the O-ring meets the mating surface and turn another 3/4 of a turn. Do not overtighten. Install the shield plate and bleed the fuel system.
On some diesel powered vehicles there is a warning light to indicate that the filter needs to be drained. I don't know whether or not this is the case on the S/V40.
Bill.
