Scotland isn't known for having the warmest or driest climate, in fact if I look out the window and the sun is shining there is every chance it will be pouring down or even snowing ten minutes later. Therefore the dreaded tin worm is a major problem not only in Scotland but also in the rest of the UK and I wanted to preserve my 850 as best I could in the hope it will last another 26 years and longer.

When I bought the car back in 2020 it was rather filthy underneath. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the usual caked in huge clumps of mud around the wheel arches type of filthy but a splattering of muck that had taken 23+ years to accumulate all over the underside of the car. There was no rust whatever found when I was cleaning the underside and everything is as it left the factory

I spent two weeks with the car up on the ramp and me with a brush, scrubbing it clean with soapy water and turpentine for the stubborn parts. Once clean, I gave it a coat of Chemical Guys Bare Bones and painted the original exhaust with High temperature silver paint

Last April I decided to apply the rust prevention treatment. I used a product called Lanoguard which is a lanolin based product from sheep wool. Yes the car did smell of sheep for a couple of weeks after applying buy I have to say it was well worth the effort and the results speak for themself

Oh wow, that's every bit as fantastic as the top side!

Turpentine is an interesting choice. It's not used much in the us anymore. I did make a homemade oil and wax rust proofed out of it o ce though. I liked the smell.

I'll see if that lanolin product is available here. Lanolin is also not used a lot here, but it is gaining popularity because of Fluidfilm. Fluidfilm is quite expensive and thier spray cans dont spray nicely. I kind of like its smell too.

My reason for cleaning with turpentine was because that's what I had to hand and I knew it wouldn't damage any of the original coatings that were put on at the factory

Wow, quite impressive! Definitely getting some garage envy. I know Fluid Film is very popular in the US and is lanolin based. Seems to work very good. I undercoated my S70 the past fall in my driveway. Honestly, would not recommend unless you have a lift. Was not worth crawling around on my back for a few hours and getting drenched in lanolin just to save ~$200. But your 850 is an absolute thing of beauty!

Very impressive. Looks brand new! Very jealous of that. I’ve coated underside of cars in Waxoil before. Purely because I didn’t have a lift and it came in a spray can.
