Oh, Volvo Volvo Volvo....sigh....

We knew it would come - the Geely overlords influence was gradual but is now real.

"... Reuters reports that the company is going all in on its pivot to luxury EVs.

"This will include three SUVs, two sedans, and a new “luxury electric van aimed at boosting sales in Asia,..."”

"The makeover for Volvo, a Swedish brand that built a reputation for safety and utilitarian design, follows from a greater focus on customer trends in Asia and a push to win sales there,..."

"...a Volvo-branded MPV or van that would be based on a vehicle Geely’s Zeekr brand sells in China."

Save the Swedish Volvos!
And I thought the recent models looked like ugly Buicks.

China likes Buicks, I've read.

We have been under the impression that the Geely relationship was purely financial - that the profits from Swedish-run Volvo Cars were attractive. A smart, well-engineered car with a smart engineering staff - just let it run itself. This piece seems like that has changed.

Zeekr- body designed in Sweden

“ The Hangzhou-based company has its hand in countless EV makers around the world and is slowly starting to assert its dominance in the space. With ties to Volvo, Polestar and even Lotus, the automaker is now eyeing its next step in achieving EV domination via its Chinese brand, Zeekr.”

Hilarious and true comment in the comments of that story:
thank goodness someone is finally paying attention to the massively underserved luxury EV segment
Polestar is in a strange (bad?) position here. Second brands tend to be luxury, like Nissan did with Infiniti, Toyota did with Lexus, etc. But Volvo is already luxury (since the 2000s). So Polestar is then... what? Alternative luxury brand? Where does Polestar fit?

It was originally the in-house racing / performance division, right? NOW where is it? It seems like the stories I've seen lately imply high-end performance EVs, in the 400hp range.

Design has evolved to the Bauhaus version of “ what Rorschach pattern can I put on the wheels of my SUV box?”.
