Question about AC 1999 S70

Post by beau90 »

hey guys. Another quick question. I was reading the other threads concerning the same problem, but not sure if the solutions are the same for me.

I'm driving for about 20-25 minutes in great cold air, then starts blowing warmer air, not cold at all.

Really sucks, since I live in Texas it's un bearable and makes my ride real uncomfortable. I'm taking it to AC guys tomorrow, they have a great rep. on finding out the prob. But I don't want them to tell me its my compressor/evaporator . and wanna replace it for $$$

So let me know if you guys have any advice! thanks

While my radiator cooling fan was broken, I discovered that there is a thermal protector associated with the compressor.

When the temperature under my hood became hot enough, the AC would disengage.

Back on the highway, I could count on it again working.

Any chance your cooling fan is running at a slower speed, or the relay is messing up?

I'm not sure if it is a two speed cooling fan, but in traffic on a very hot day, I could see the AC shutting off while the engine stays cool enough to avoid blowing hoses.

Hmm. Well yeah It seems to be doing fine when I'm on the highway. and when I'm not then it will start blowing hot air..

So you're saying when the engine and what not becomes real hot it make my AC blow hot air?

That seems like a good reason..

Any way I can fix this? lol

Just got back from the AC place. They said it' my clutch causing the problem.. If I replace the a clutch I'm looking at $580.00 parts and Labor no warranty though.

But If I replace the whole compressor, new clutch included of course I'm looking around the $800.50 vicinity...

Should I just replace the whole compressor??

I don't know if you can find a shop that will do this but the clutch can be usually be repaired by re-shimming it. Here are some threads that describe the problem and some repair procedures.

Be sure to read N8-50's pdf writeup.

and lastly, the ghetto fix:

I reshimmed mine a couple of weeks ago. I followed the Volvospeed PDF, made the puller, and it all worked just fine. I'd recommend getting a slightly longer M6 bolt than they recommended; I had to stack something on top of it as it was too short.

So buying a new compressor etc.. wont fix the prob? Or the only solution is to re shim?

A new compressor with a new clutch will fix the problem for sure. A new clutch will likely fix the problem. Both of those alternatives carry a very high parts price.

The clutch shimming procedure can be done with no parts cost and no labor charges if you do it yourself. It will be roughly the the same labor charge as changing the clutch if you can find a shop to do it.

I can understand if most shops won't do the procedure as they are on the hook for the results. That is particularly true if they have never done the procedure and seen how well it usually works.

I pulled my own shims out.........The independent VoVo shop wanted $125.
If you aren't going to do it yourself, shop around till you find a shop that will "Pull the shims out".
If you have it done by a shop, please post the price.......
