'96 850R Wagon: Coolant Warning light: thermostat problem?

Post by 96volvo850RJPN »

Coolant light started to lit up lately :( ... When I went to the dealer for the other service light, I had asked the guy about the coolant light. I was told the liquid may be hitting low but not low enough to add right now. But please paying attention to it & let him know....

The coolant light lit up at the first acceleration after a complete stop. But after releasing the accel, the light turns off. The car runs great & no smokes or any type of leaks at this point.

When I got into a gas station, I had asked the guy to fill up the coolant as it seemed bit low anyway. So, the guy opened the cap & suddenly air shot out!!! After that, the coolant liquid came back & hit max. So he didn't add any coolant at that time.(perhaps pressure builds up?)

After a bit of pressure release, the light did not lit for a short while. But again, it started to lit as it used to.

As I can't figure out exact problem on this, perhaps some of the 96 850 owners may have better idea. I would appreciate some insights on this.
I am thinking it has something to do with the thermostat??? Perhaps it's time for a new one?

T-stat would cause the car to consistently run hotter (failed closed) or cool (failed open).

You just need more coolant. It simply leaks out of the system over months/years. My light always comes on during accelleration these days -- I've just been too lazy to add water.

The whole thing happened to me years ago, and I put a bit of water in, and I didn't see the light for a year or more.
