Seller feedback feature?

Post by CIK7 »

I just sold an item, but after a good bit of skepticism from buyer. Not throwing them under bus. I did provide them with links to my previous sale posts from 19 and 21. I made 3 or 4 sales from one or both posts. The skepticism was not from being a member per say, but the lack of buyer protection. On PayPal there is a pay by 'goods and services' and 'family, friends'. First one required a tax id # which i dont have. Latter does not offer buyer protection. I don't trust any 'Pay' services like fb, apple, google, etc or venmo, cashapp, etc.
I think it would be a great idea to have a pinned seller feedback feature in the classifieds for members to rate other members based on previous transactions. This way potential buyers have the opportunity to see who is reputable.

CIK7, this is a good idea. Let me "sleep on it"...

This has led me to ponder the value of Join date, number of posts, and number of thanks as additional signposts to a seller's "reliability score".

Oh I see. Well that makes sense. They said something about foregoing 24% of money to the IRS, but I didnt read it all. I am not even doing anything commercial. Maybe Paypal is in bed with IRS like the elite politicians. Im not kidding. I am on SS and broke almost all the time. Trying to make it through and Paypal is acting like an entitled 'we will pay your taxes for you' entity. I understand the government needs money to function but come on. It is becoming more crazy. I hope this post doesnt get me in trouble.

A couple of years ago - as a result of the big tax reform bill back in '18 or so - the IRS decided to change the threshold for reporting Gig workers like Uber and restaurant folks. PayPal, Venmo, eBay and such all got caught up in the move. Late last year IRS announced they would suspend the change until next year, or something. The basic argument seems to be that anybody engaged in "commerce" already owes taxes on any profit they make, so the tricky part is the whole profit-loss thing on platforms like eBay. PayPal put the guardrails in place on their platform for whenever whatever happens actually happens.
Some years ago - maybe ten ? - the Tax Guardians in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania decided to pitch a tent on the Fairgrounds in Carlisle to catch all the Tax scofflaws selling rusty old car parts. Everybody who had a vendor space had to have a bank account in PA, whether they lived there or not. There used to be a waiting list to get a space there. Now there is plenty of room.

It’s the States that want the PayPal info. You only owe tax on the profit after your cost and expenses on a car part but the sales tax is due on top of that. If you don’t collect it from your buyer, you owe it.

Done! I didn't manage to come up with a whole bunch of rules about it, so right now it's just write some feedback.

So does everyone on Craigslist or Facebook Market Place or Ebay have to record everything they sell on those sites, take taxes from the seller, and report/pay taxes to the IRS?

Is it not a case of how much you sell and if you are running a business selling parts or moving junk out of your garage?

Sales tax goes to the state, not the IRS

Each state is different , but in NY under $600 per year is exempt from collection of state tax, unless you are already registered for tax collection, in which case you collect it and remit with form ST-131

This isn’t a new law , the squealing is from the tax cheats who haven’t been collecting it who are now visible
