Wanting to bring this old thread of mine back up and see if anyone can provide any more info. Maybe some new eyes.

I ran a test today on the voltage. As you can see in my video, the motor pulses. Works fine once maybe twice when switching to fresh air. THen it starts to do the pulse thing. While doing this, the voltage from the ECC is actually pulsing. Goes from ~12v to lets call it 0v (there is actually a small amount of voltage but i don't recall what it was at the moment). As I have stated before, I have tired 2 different motors and they both react the same.

If anyone has a spare known good ECC they could send me to test with I will gladly pay shipping. And it it fixes my issue would certainly buy it.

I would like to see if the ECC has any codes but can not find out how to read it other than that old thing that Robert DIY uses. I have a DICE and VIDA but no idea how to use it for this. And cant find any info on using it for the ECC either.

Jimmy57 warned us of this on the v70 98-00 ECC. Luckily the units are cheap used

I did end up ordering one from eBay. Just waiting on it to get here. Hopefully it works. Guess I should build the little LED ECC code reader I’ve seen for the pre 99 P80 and see if it works. Just worried about frying my actual ECU. I’m still a bit baffled there’s no good information on using vida for this.

Good luck with that ECC. I may be blowing smoke on this, but I thought I read something a while back about there being different part numbers for ECC's. I may be confused with 850's where I think there was a part number change.

Volvo also like to upchange part numbers just for giggles, so be careful it is the correct one.

If you have no luck, I have a bunch of ECC's but I have not tested them yet. They are on the list for when the R goes back on the road.

Oh great. Thanks for the heads up. I didn’t actually pull part numbers and check. 🤞

well this is now even more puzzling. got the new ECC in and it is behaving EXACTLY the same way. "new" ecc and servo with the same behavior. maybe it isn't broken and this is how it is? At the moment it will open and close the fresh air door. But when it goes to open it to fresh air, it does that very odd pulse thing once it starts moving. And to recap, it behaves this way whether its hooked up to the arm or not. oh well. guess i will just live with it. at least it will close the door.

I have never actually sat and watched it so maybe you are correct. Perhaps it does this to assess the amount of cold air to allow in to the system to regulate the temperature?

I suppose that could be it. With the craziness that is the ridiculousness of the overly complicated climate control in this car, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Because, when the motor is first plugged in to the ECC, or the ECC unplugged and plugged back in, the first time the recirculate button is pressed, nothing happens. Press it again, and it closes. First press of the fresh air button, it opens one smooth motion as you would expect. But, every time after that it does that stepped opening. All too much for me. I do miss cables controlled manual doors.
