Timing belt snapped on the highway, no odd grinding or noises noted before hand. Belt was in good condition and only symptom was slight water pump leak. 404000 on the engine when it hit the bullet. Torn as now I need to find a car or get this engine and tranny swapped. Will speak to my mechanic tomorrow to see prices on engines and what he has got. An 06 matrix is fetching close to5-6k privately so it may be economical to fix this one.

Sorry, to hear that. I wonder if the coolant affected the belt over time. How old was the belt?

Was this the 1998 V70?

Belt and pump were 2-3 years old maybe 50–70 k km oem Volvo I believe. I noticed the slow leak starting Friday and drove it without incident for about 200km before this.

Hmm, that seems really soon for OE Volvo parts to fail. That's not a long time for timing components.

Agreed. My theory is maybe the water pump was damaged when the coolant partially froze but I don’t know why it would go downhill 3-5 weeks after the event. The belt teeth were still good so I am unsure how it snapped. May do an autopsy tomorrow by removing the belt cover. If the pump broke then it would explain the deluge of coolant that came out of the car. V70’s of any year are hard to find out here for cheaper and being back at school means I do not see it advisable to spend a lot. Might ask my mechanic to be on the lookout and wait a month till I push for a new car. I could go for an older s60 as I know it is an iterative improvement on the 5 cylinder engine. We will see. Part of what weighing in on this is the 2 parts cars I have up north. Might look into getting one running at the end of April we will see. It hasn’t been a great year thus far but one always looks up.

Hoping this isn’t the end of my time on this forum

I had an INA tensioner fail at 30k wiping out my brand new cylinder head.

#sadface

Good luck and let us know if we can help source an engine or head.
