Hello everyone, my name is Mats and I'm from Sweden.

My dad always had Volvos and I my first car memory is of his yellow 142, then in the 80's we have a green metallic 245 GL and that was followed by a 440 GL and 940. I learned to drive in the 440 and it was an ok car. My first own car was a an Audi 90 with the five cylinder engine and that engine sound just gives me the best kind of goose bumps. I've never been much into Volvos myself but the 850 engines of course had a special place in my heart due to the sound.

So having modified and restored a few VW's and Porsches, back in 2019 I decided to build a Super Seven type of car from the ground up.
Most people use a Ford two liter engine for these but for me that wasnt an option, it needed to be a five. I first of all sourced a 960 manual M90 gearbox and a few months later I bought a very tired 1994 850 GLT for €250. The suspension felt like an oil tanker and the body was rusted and the paint faded but the engine felt strong and had zero oilleaks so my son and I removed the engine, harness and ecu's and sold the rest to a scrapyard.

This was august 2020 and I had a rolling chassis with engine and gearbox ready.

Fast forward to September 2022 and during the summer I had spent alot of time sorting out the ECU wiring, shortening the harness down and gotten the engine started for a first test drive. Hopefully it will be ready and roadlegal during this summer.

I found my way here while searching for info on the V-VIS vacuum lines and I have to hook it up according to the diagrams now and will test it as soon as I get a bit of spare time.

Impressive!

Did the length of the 5 and placement affect the weight balance? Was the chassis a "kit" piece or did you fabricate it from drawings?

Nice work. I have a friend with an early 60s Lotus 7 with an old Ford.

Thank you :)

The engine length was ok, sure its about 30 kgs heavier than a ford lump but its so central in the chassis it doesnt matter much. The M90 gearbox is quite wide towards the rear compared to the Ford type 9 gearbox so that meant some changes to the chassis.

I built the chassis myself from the Haynes book "Build your own sports car on a budget" but did some changes to fit the engine gearbox and the bodywork which is a one off design.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. I dont want to upload to many pictures to take up space here but I have a few summary blog posts on my own website called Matsgarage, com and a few short clips on my youtube channel. The very first test drive from last summer and a short braaaaaaap clip from a few days later. https://www.youtube.com/@MatsGarage

Now I am going to see if I can find some new inlet manifold to injector seals to order. :)

Here is as it looks at the moment. Completed all the headlights and wiring yesterday. Today I will attach the front fenders and then its just waiting for the new injector seals that will arrive next week. The injectors has been away to be checked and get new seals too.
