2004 XC70 Instrument Cluster Issues

Post by cuhfs »

Getting ready to send my instrument cluster to XeMODeX for their repair service (mine was working sometimes... and now dead) but figured I ask this group first since the charge is $449 + $50 shipping UPS ground ($$$$). What would happen if I pulled an instrument cluster from a 03 oer 04 XC70 salvage car and installed that? I assume it wont function since it seem the repair is the only thing discussed on the forum but was curious if anyone tried a swap with a salvage one and what if anything happened? Thanks

Your old DIM should have some stickers on the back with various numbers. Call a knowledgeable Volvo wrecking yard, like Erie Volvo, and give them the numbers on the stickers. (They’ll know which of the numbers are needed to assure a compatible replacement.)

I’m speaking from personal experience, having purchased a used DIM from no-longer-in-business wrecking yard. In my case the replacement DIMs odometer retained the mileage of the donor car.

I had my DIM rebuilt at Zemodex in 2018 and they did a good job so I can't say anything negative about them. I just had them fix something on warranty last week ( the window that shows selected gear, time and temp wasn't working) so they fixed it in a day and shipped it back the next day and paid for the shipping. Good company if you decide to rebuild yours.

On a P2 I thought the DIM is pinned to the ECM like the late P80 cars? A swap would require a reprogram if that’s true

Some swap-ins will work, some won’t. Certain conditions must be met. As it was explained to me, first off, the year must be a match - you can’t put a 2004 DIM in a 2003 car. However you CAN cross models within a given year, ie you can put a 2003 S80 DIM into a 2003 V70.
Second off, besides assuring a year match, certain code numbers on the back of the original and replacement DIMs must match. As I recall there are a two or three numbers printed on white sticker(s). Sorry but I don’t recall which numbers are the critical ones. All I know is that when I ordered my replacement DIM from Southern Vo-go (no longer in business?) he had me read off the code numbers to him over phone. At some point in the middle of me reading numbers he told me “Stop, that’s all I need.”
Bottom line is that the replacement DIM worked in my car (2003 V70) with the odometer reading the mileage from the donor car which was about 100,000 less my car’s actual mileage. I noted that delta with a Dymo labeler and posted it prominently under the hood (like anyone would really care at this point.)
