Hi all,
Changed the timing belt and the water pump on turbo petrol Volvo yesterday.
I have successfully done this before on another model.
So following the work the P0016 and P0017 codes came up.
So this is what happened
I lined up all the marks both up the top and down the bottom on the crank. All was good. Somehow during the process the the crank markings became mis-aligned and the only way to realign them was to rotate the crank one full turn.
When the new belt was installed, the markings up top appeared to be aligned and so all was good. The new belt was extraordinarily difficult to get on even though it was the same part that came off.
Interestingly the belt was barely worn even with 100k and 10 years on it, the water pump rotors were as shiny as a new one.
On driving the car it did behave differently. Auto changes were not as they used to be and the speed vs revs has changed.
So I ask, what is my best solution to resolve this problem if there is one at all.
And can the new belt tensioner be used again or are they a one time only bit of kit.
Any help gratefully welcome and appreciated.
Cheers
Kym

the belt shouldn't be too difficult to install, brace it against the lower crank pulley so it can't jump onto the top of the teeth , use a screwdriver to hold it in place, like this video shows.
On edit…this video does not show preload, use the VIDA procedure

Hi,
The belt is on the car.
When I started the car and drove a short distance the engine light came on with the codes in the original post.
So unfortunately the crank was turned on revolution when the belt was off to align the marks on the crank with the block.
Is that likely to cause a problem?
I can realign the marks at the top relative easily.
Cheers

That 1Auto video is incorrect. On cars with VVT you have to preload the hubs by passing the mark and going backwards to set the timing marks per Vida
If you don’t preload it you will get the cam error code as you note

Thanks Abscate,
Will moving the crank a full turn without the belt on cause grief or do I just line the marks on the top pulleys again and reinstall the belt?
Can the tensioner be used again?
Cheers

A timing belt job means new belt , tensioner, and idler pulley. At 200k, it also means water pump.
If you were gentle turning crank through the revolution it should be fine

Hi abscate,
Thanks for the reply, very helpful.
I have replaced the belt, the tensioner, the idler and the water pump.
It is just the issue of the timing that needs to be sorted.
I suspect I will need to remove the timing belt, gently readjust the to cogs and replace the the belt. I think they may be a tooth or two out which I hope will be manageable.
Cheers

Next time before removing old t-belt do a few marks on the belt and sprockets, so you could place it back without skipping a tooth. If installing a new t-belt, just transfer the marks. It never failed my, and I don't remember a single time I put a t-belt on the crankshaft correctly in the first try.
