Volvo Repair Database Motronic 4.3 to 4.4

Post by SUENTO »

I'm fairly new to Volvos and modifying car electronics in general, but I was wondering if I would be able to swap from a 4.3 to a 4.4 since my 850 is a 2.0L T5 (B5204T) from Italy. So basically I'd have to get the ecu from a proper 2.3L T5, would that cause major problems/would the car even start? What kind of modifications would I need to do to get it working? 8)

In theory, yes you should be able to convert, but it's not going to be a drop-in, most likely.

You can start with a 98MY M4.4 ECU and then modify it to suit the 2.0T. I know there are some sample bin files in the Motronic Suite for the 2.0T's that would give a good starting point.

If you're not up to doing your own tuning and flashing an ECU, this may not be a project you would want to pursue, however.
'97 854 T5 - Manual Swap/M4.4/COP/NA cams/P2R Brakes/16T/ chassis bracing/ XC70 nose swap
'97 855 GLT - Hers. RN swap/16T/COP/VVT/exhaust/302s/Flashed M4.4/ chassis bracing/ 2 kid seats
'78 GLE - Waiting in the wings. Future whiteblock/T5 swap.

The Others- '83 TBird turbo, '85 Mercury Marquis LTS (1 of 134), '86 LTD Wagon, '81 Granada GL, '76 Beetle, '93 F-150 I6

I'd love to learn to tune/flash ECUs, it's just really confusing at first and from what I've heard tuning the 4.3 isn't worth it.
Thanks for the reply and the link :D

The first link is just to the M4.4 thread here.

The M4.4 Wiki page has a bunch of other info as well.
