How to remove brake fluid reservoir screen?

Post by FireFox31 »

On a 2000 V70, how do you remove the screen affixed to the fill neck of the brake fluid reservoir? Mine has some debris which I'd like to remove. Also, I'd like to do a fluid flush, so would like to suck out as much old fluid from the reservoir as possible before adding new. Thanks.

It should just un-clip. You may need a small screw driver to get under the edge.

What is the screen for? It's not a universal thing with all vehicles.

I just spent about an hour trying carefully to get the screen out of my 2007 xc-70 reservoir. I was looking for a special lock or some trick. But no. You simply have to use a couple of small screw drivers and/or some needle nose pliers to get it out. You might think it is keyed when you look carefully at the mouth of the reservoir BUT IT IS NOT. Just pry and pull and the %$#%^#$ will come out. If you don't poke a hole in the screen you can reuse it. Otherwise screens are available at not much money. Experience is the best teacher.

I have had cars I have helped with that have had holes in the bottom of the screen to allow the fluid to be turkey baster removed. Some are missing altogether. Like you say, it is a swine to get out without damaging it. Why it could not have just been a drop in screen who knows?
