What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

Out in the 850 today to collect some parts from my local Volvo dealership

Came back home and my spare key guy arrived to programme the new key to the car, he's Volvo registered and uses Volvo software, he has to call Volvo to get a security code to programme the key, all very technical and took over an hour to complete. He removed all the missing keys from the system and I now have two keys and one clone linked to the car.

When doing the power steering fluid flush a couple of days ago I removed the serpentine belt to check the tensioner and when spun it sounded rough therefore needed changing sooner rather than later.

I'm glad I did decide to change it as there was only the one bolt at the bottom of the tensioner holding it on, the top bolt was missing which I can only assume was from when the cam-belt was changed. It was the original tensioner dated 2005 and I suspect the original belt so at least I know they are now good for another few years

Looking at the old tensioner the T60 Torx fitting has cracked, I'm glad I managed to get to off before it split wide open

System flushed 5 times with soft Scottish water, (if it's good enough for whisky manufacturing it's good enough to flush the Volvo) 2 times with de-ionized water then filled with 4.5 litres of Volvo concentrated coolant

Well, we're back from our 1800 mile road trip. Much more reasonable weather this leg. No tools or spare parts were harmed or taken from boxes. Half qt of oil added. Check engine light popped on again, and like before it was a hot shut-off at a gas stop, re-start to move the car, shut-off and restart to leave. Seems to go away after a start or two - maybe I'm confusing it when it re-starts hot right away. Haven't checked code.

Observations -
A minor shake develops through the floor at 82-85 mph. I went up to 90 a couple of places and it seemed better. I'm assuming older tires with a funny balance frequency spot.

We're not getting any real mileage in a P2 turbo at 80 mph, fully loaded, with pass climbing and big wind. 25-26-ish is about all I got.

Wind noise over the roof with the sunroof cloth cover shut is much lower in big headwinds. Kind of like airplane noise. Close the cover and it was barely there.

About to embark on a 2000km trip. Will do an oil change after and check the filter for shiny bits.

My partners car needs a coolant flush, trans drain and fill, and perhaps a new radiator.

Decided it were smarter to get pristine one (along with sway bar) off an unwrecked murder car (exactly what it sounds like) at a yard near the port in Baltimore, and replace it with that after reading the recommendations from volvo for structural parts with kinked or creased metal.
The difference was apparent when it finally allowed the passenger side control arm, axle, knuckle, sway bar end links and tie rod links all fit where they were supposed to.

What do you (and everyone) make of the claim that new cars lower the insurance premium because they're statistically safer, and you're not paying to protect sheet metal, you're paying for the enormous medical bills for bodies?
