Fitting the REAR strut spring seats into the anchorage

I don't understand how to orient the spring seats into the strut anchorage. It seems to fit inside fine in every position as you rotate it all the way around. Hard for me to believe it doesn't matter though. There are no obvious notches or anything to indicate where you rotate it to.

Any advice on this?

Attach a picture, as I recall they have an indent for the end of the spring coil. I assume you are talking about the front struts? Are you referring to the bottom rubber seats or the top or the top?

Yes the spring fits into the spring seat and the strut fits into the coil spring into one and only one position. But then the bottom of the strut piston rotates freely into any orientation to line up with the control arm bolt. Which leaves the spring seat free to rotate around inside the anchorage with no apparent home position.

What am I missing?

The strut bearing bolts into the strut tower only one way also, therefore the entire strut rotates at the top on the strut bearing and the bottom on the lower ball joint, I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Home position would be determined by the outer tie rod end coming off the rack and pinion.

Blacklab-totally understandable. I'm sure it's just me, confused about what I'm doing. Here's a picture of the OEM strut. The thing I don't get is the bottom piece that I'm holding onto, the part the bottom of the spring sit on to, freely spins and can sit in any position equally. That means then that the whole spring (sitting inside the spring seat) could also fit into the anchorage at any point around the circumference. I guess I don't see how, after I arbitrarily pick a spot on the possible positions and loosen my spring clamps, whereby it will be firmly set in that position, will then line up so that the anchorage bolts (as you correctly point out, only bolt into the car body in one way) will line up with the car body bolt holes.

Sorry I'm making this hard but I just don't see it. Oh, and just to confirm, these are rear struts and springs. No tie rods or rack.
