VAT (Value Added Tax)

I'm looking at some bits from Skandix, a good parts supplier in Germany. Their prices are in Euros with a note that a 19% VAT is included. 19% is a chunk!

I've run into this before buying parts in Europe and wondered why you'd need to pay this if the parts are being shipped to non-European countries. I dug around in their info pages and found this explanation:



"Currency and VAT
Invoices will be processed in Euro. All prices in our online-shop have 19% VAT included. If you are a registered workshop or reseller you will get access to our net price list as well.

Customers from within the European Community
Invoices will be processed in EUR with the German VAT of 19%. Consumers in other EU countries may be subject to different VAT rates, which will be shown according to your country of delivery. If you have a valid Value added tax identification number (VATIN) you will get a net invoice without VAT.

Customers from other countries
If you are located outside the European Community you will get a net invoice in EUR without VAT."

You don’t pay VAT on a U.S. shipment but the shipping is steep. It’s cheaper to pay the VAT and have it shipped by someone to you

In my trips to Europe I’ve yet to understand what exact value is being added in the VAT. Maybe no one has explained it to me?
