2006 XC90

I’M A SINGLE MOM DESPERATELY NEEDS HELP
Last month I bought my 2006 Volvo XC90 5cyl. Roughly 2.5 - 3 weeks after buying my car it was running as good as I could hope for. No codes, no strange noises or smells, no shaking, it was perfect. And than suddenly my car went into limp mod due to my tensioner pulley seizing up, breaking my serpentine belt which ended up catching fire on the way to take my baby to have surgery. Since this happened a month ago I’ve been without a vehicle and no way to get my 2 little kids from point A to point B.
I ended up being able to get the car towed back to my house and I’m stumped. After changing the serpentine belt the engine now sounds awful, and the car is shaking bad. One thought I had was that when I started the car back up after putting the fire out to move it further off the highway a piece of the melted timing belt cover could have gotten under the timing belt and made it jump a tooth besides that I really have no idea. There are no codes, and the only light that comes on, on my dash is my ABS light which I’m sure is due to the fire being right where my ABS line is to my front passenger tire.
I’m begging if there is someone… ANYONE on this forum that can help guide me through how to fix my car I haven’t been able to drive my kids anywhere in over a month and haven’t been able to get my baby to the surgery he was supposed to get that day. Can ANYONE please help me.

Just to confirm, you did get the serpentine belt and tensioner replaced?

Likely correct on the ABS, replaced one with an Amazon $19 unit a few months ago and working on my kids 05 XC90.

On running rough, timing off is a possibility. Starting simple—with a fire in that area it could have damaged the lower motor mount on the passenger side at the bottom of the engine. This could cause a lot of vibration if the other mounts are bad. Shouldn’t cause rough running though.

You can inspect the timing belt for damage. Pull the passenger side of the top cover (two torx and two clips) to make sure belt is not tore up. With a fire in that spot you should really do the belt/tensioner/water pump anyway. Risk of the belt breaking and destroying the engine.

If you don’t have a good local independent mechanic I’d reach out to Robert DIY on YouTube. Awesome Volvo guy who helps people in need. He is based in Cincinnati but sometimes makes it to the southwest.

I replaced the serpentine belt and than realized that the tensioner seizing up was the cause of the break so I have to take the belt back off and replace the tensioner pulley.
The fire partially melted the timing belt cover which is what made me think that a piece of the plastic from the cover could’ve gotten under the belt causing it to jump a tooth.
And I don’t have any good mechanic in the area nor can I afford one so I’m doing the work myself. I will inspect the lower motor mount though and check out Robert DIY on YouTube thank you.

I'm sorry for your troubles and hope it is nothing catastrophic like the timing did jump and bent a valve, etc. Anyway, I would definitely check out the timing belt to make sure it's not damaged and to make sure the crank and cam pulleys are still aligned where they are supposed to be. If everything is good there, you can eliminate that as the problem, although it would probably be smart to just replace the timing belt and tensioner for peace of mind. That engine mount at the passenger wheel side can deteriorate and let the engine move around as can the one in front of the engine. You can check them both out when you drop the belly pan/splash guard. Wish I could help more...

Can you share some engine pics so people here can visually see any damage? Maybe can add a video of it running to help determine the issue.

As far as the codes, you did scan it? The ABS light should have a specific Volvo code so it might also help if you can find someone with access to a shop-level scanner.

Also, just as a word of encouragement, you are not the only single mom working on her XC90 2.5t. A member in Swedespeed also is a single mom and is an active member. She has repaired a lot of her engine and XC90 with the help of forum members and a friend.

As chitownV says, I'm also a single mom doing my best to keep my 2006 XC90 going. I have, with the help of friendly Volvo users in this and other forums, been able to do many repairs myself and have saved a ton of money. That said, I'm sorry that I'm not able to help you with this issue—I'm still quite a newcomer to auto maintenance. But you have done the right thing to come here to ask for help. I hope everything works out for you.
